摘要: Apparatus for the continuous extrusion of metals in which feed is introduced into two (or more) speed apart circumferential grooves in a rotating wheel (or rotating wheels) to contact an arcuate shoe portion and abutments extending into the grooves. The feed is constrained by the abutments to flow through frusto-conical exit apertures of cone angles in the range of 5.degree.-45.degree. in the shoe portion to a chamber which may also be of the divergent frusto-conical form, and is extruded as relatively thin-walled, large-cross-section products. Mixer plates are profiled to distribute flow evenly from the apertures to around the die opening. An extrusion die body for cylindrical extrusions is located and axially centered by set screws. Where an even number of grooves are utilized, an extrusion mandrel may be secured to the shoe portion by a bolt positioned centrally of the grooves and having a passage for injection of lubricant or oxidation inhibiting fluids. Since the volume feed rate is enhanced and the distance travelled by the material from the grooves is reduced, friction losses and the likelihood of discontinuities arising in extrudate products of relatively large hollow cross-section are thereby reduced.

摘要: Continuous extrusion apparatus (FIG. 1) including a rotatable, grooved, wheel 2 is provided with a shoe 6 mounted on a pivot 7 to be rotatable between a position engaging the wheel 2 and a dis-engaged position. The shoe 6 carries a tooling cartridge 10 including an abutment block 14, an expansion block 16, a die block 18 and an exit block 20 connected together with bolts 22 and held in position by locking keys 46 and a retaining ring 50. A reciprocable ram 60 registers with the cartridge 10 when the shoe 6 is in the dis-engaged position and is operable to raise a cartridge 10 from an associated heating chamber 56 into the shoe 6 or to lower a cartridge 10 from the shoe 6 into a storage chamber (not shown). By utilizing a cartridge 10, change-over and pre-heating of sets of dies is facilitated, enabling the apparatus to be connected directly to a continuous casting furnace (not shown).

摘要: The machine is provided with a set of two pairs of die halves 60, 62 (FIG. 7) mounted in a framework on hydraulically actuated piston and cylinder assemblies. The die halves 60 and 62 of each pair are relatively radially reciprocable to grip or release a workpiece 102, 104 and the two pairs of die halves are relatively axially reciprocable to effect cold pressure welding together of end portions of the workpieces 102, 104. Adjoining end faces of the die halves are formed with nose portions 100 having inner anvil edges for effecting welding flash removal from the workpieces. In operation, the die halves are moved in sequence to grip the workpieces; to urge the ends of the workpieces together to form a cold pressure weld upset zone; to release the workpieces; to grip one of the workpieces; to urge the gripped workpiece axially relative to a pair of anvil edges to clear flash material from the upset to maintain the cross-sectional area at the weld upset zone substantially constant; and to re-position the upset weld zone centrally of the nose portions to repeat the sequence. Removal of the flash material intermediate consecutive weld upsets is effected in alternate directions. The anvil edges may be staggered, angled or of helical form to enhance the shearing effect to clear the flash material from the upset weld zone.

摘要: An apparatus for use in recovering an article at least partially submerged in water comprises at least two floatable members each having an arm mounted thereon and whose buoyancy can be varied, each arm carrying a recovery member having gripping or scooping means. A pivot interconnects said arms so that their motion opposes that of the recovery members. A locking device for progressively and releasably locking the arms with respect to each other is provided such that on release thereof the pivot moves downwardly by gravity, causing the recovery members to come together in a caliper-like action. Pressure sensing means in recovery members feeds back information to the locking device to cause the arms to lock and prevent an increase in pressure is attained. A further embodiment does not need a locking device. Each of the floatable members is pivotally connected to one of the arms in an upward direction to a maximum elevation, the pivotable floatable members being arranged to stabilize the apparatus when they are elevated against rolling thereof. A further locking device is provided to hold each of the pivotable floatable members at least in the horizontal and in the maximum elevated positions. A method for recovering submerged articles using such an apparatus and a method for adjusting the buoyancy of an apparatus and improving its submerged stability by the use of pivotable floatable members is also disclosed.

摘要: An adjustable buoyancy apparatus comprises a frame and at least two floating members of variable buoyancy which are pivotally coupled to the frame for pivotable motion in a substantially vertical plane between horizontal positions and maximum elevated positions. In the maximum elevated positions, the angle between the longitudinal axes of the floatable members and the horizontal is less than 90 degrees and the floating members are inclined upwardly toward each other. Locking mechanisms hold the floatable members in the horizontal and maximum elevated positions. This floatable member arrangement compensates for the rolling tendencies of the apparatus and stabilizes the apparatus when the apparatus is partially or completely submerged.

摘要: A joystick controller for utilizing omnidirectional pivoting manual displacement by an operator to operate transducers for producing control signals comprises a mounting plate defining an opening therethrough and gimbal mounting means secured to the mounting plate for pivotally mounting a joystick shaft extending through the opening. The joystick shaft has an operator knob on one end, and a gauge plate on the other end, the gauge plate having a first straight edge and a second straight edge perpendicular thereto. First and second lever arms are pivotally mounted and biased against the first and second straight edges of the gauge plate, whereby displacement of the joystick knob causes displacement of the gauge plate and pivots the lever arms biased thereagainst. Follower rods extend from the lever arms to engage the gauge plate. First and second transducers are respectively operated by the pivoting lever arms. The transducers are either potentiometers, Hall effect sensing devices, LDVT transducers or LED-based transducers. A spring biased sliding centering collar returns the joystick shaft to its neutral position, absent operator input. The opening in the mounting plate limits inclination of the joystick shaft to maintain biased engagement of the gauge plate and lever arms.

The abutment 4 is spaced from the walls of the groove 26 so that in operation a lining of the feed material is produced. Indentations 52 assist in holding the lining in place. The extrusion is generally in a radial direction through an aperture 58. The extrusion orifices (not shown) may be of part annular cross-section of different area. The extrusion aperture may extend from outside the groove 26 to permit of increased orifice area.
