Disclosed is an improved high voltage switch operating mechanism which utilizes energy stored in a spiral spring to drive high voltage switches from either the open to the closed position or the closed to the open position. A spiral spring interconnects a rotatably mounted drive lever, which can be rotated to charge the sprial spring, and an output lever, which drives the switch either open or closed when the switch operating mechanism is tripped. A gearbox assembly reduces the torque required to charge the spiral spring when supplied either manually with a crank or electrically through a motor. The output lever is held in the switch-closed or the switch-opened position by improved first or second output lever latch assemblies, respectively, while the drive lever is rotated to charge the spring. Once the spiral spring is charged, first and second main latches engage the drive lever holding it in a spring charged position. The switch operating mechanism is tripped by releasing first or second output lever latch assemblies, which can be released manually by a single trip handle or by solenoids connected to control circuitry. When tripped, the spiral spring reacts against the output lever to either open or close the switch depending on the position of the switch at the initiation of the operation. After a switching operation is completed, the spring can be recharged for the next operation. Manual and electrical trip interlock assemblies are provided to prevent the switch operating mechanism from being tripped either manually or electrically while the spiral spring is being recharged either manually or electrically.

Disclosed is a switch suitable for use in power systems. The switch is of the vertical break type, having two stationary support insulators and one reciprocatory, insulative push rod, wherein movement of a switch blade takes place in a plane which also includes the insulators and the push rod. The two insulators are mounted on a base, one insulator supporting a switch blade hinge assembly, and the other insulator supporting a contact assembly for the switch blade. A novel linkage mounted to the hinge assembly connects the blade to the push rod and permits at least 90.degree. of movement of the blade without adversely affecting dielectric clearances between the push rod and the insulators. The insulators remain stationary when the switch operates, only the push rod and the novel linkage moving to provide motive force to the blade. The push rod may be reciprocated by interconnection to a rotatable shaft via a lever. The shaft may be connected to an operating pipe reciprocated by a remote operator to rotation therewith. After the switch is open, the novel linkage permits the push rod and the lever to form an over-center toggle which, together with the more than 90.degree. opening of the blade, prevents the blade from inadvertently moving toward engagement with the stationary contact as a result of external forces such as wind, etc. The switch and the linkage are usable in single pole and polyphase switches in a variety of configurations.

A shielded access door for a nuclear steam generator manway port having a beam of radiation streaming therethrough, the port being surrounded by a manway flange. The door comprises a bracket adapted to be removably connected to the flange. A plurality of swing arms have the first end portion thereof pivotally connected to the bracket. A first shield member is connected to the second end portions of the arms and is disposed parallel and adjacent to the port for shielding against the beam of radiation. The first shield member and the port define a gap therebetween for allowing access to the steam generator interiorly of the port while simultaneously shielding against the beam of radiation. The first shield member has a ventilation hole therethrough in communication with the port for ventilating the port, so that air-borne radioactive particles present interiorly of the steam generator are exhausted from the steam generator. A second shield member, which is attached to the first shield member, is coaxially aligned with the hole of the first shield member and is spaced-apart from the first shield member for preventing the beam of radiation from exiting through the ventilation hole. The second shield member is capable of being interposed between the beam of radiation and the hole for shielding the hole against the beam of radiation. Moreover, the first shield member is formed of light weight connectable segments to facilitate lifting and positioning of the door at the manway port.

Cooling air delivery systems for gas turbine engines are used to increase component life and increase power and efficiencies. The present system increases the component life and increases efficiencies by better utilizing the cooling air bled from the compressor section of the gas turbine engine. For example, a first flow of cooling air is directed to the nozzle and shroud assembly and another portion of the first flow is exited from the nozzle plenum into an annular reservoir to improve cooling of a rotor assembly and to at least reduce ingestion of hot power gases into the internal portion of the engine. The system further includes a second flow of cooling air which is directed through internal passages of the engine and into the annular reservoir and is used to cool the rotor assembly and to at least reduce ingestion of hot power gases into the internal portion of the gas turbine engine. To insure that the least amount of hot power gas is ingested into the internal portion of the engine is minimized a radial blade flange arrangement and a radial shroud flange arrangement axially overlap each other in a preestablished radially spaced proximity forming a buffering zone therebetween into which the mixed cooling air in the annular reservoir is directed. Thus, increasing component life and increasing power and efficiencies of the engine.

Endoprosthetic metacarpal phalangeal joint devices are well known in various forms including unitary flexible structures for connection between the bones, and others with separate phalangeal and metacarpal components for respective bone connection and inter-engagement or connection for mutual articulation in a hinge action. All such devices are applied individually to respective joints and can tend to fail due to conditions leading to ulnar drift. It is now proposed that this tendency be obviated by mechanically interconnecting a plurality of devices of the latter form in the hand, suitably by use of a common hinge pin. The pin preferably has slight longitudinal curvature to pass through the natural joint centers. The phalangeal components preferably each have a socket for bone connection and a stem for axle connection, the stem being slidably and rotatably received in the socket to accomodate torsional loading.

An improved support assembly for a circuit-interrupting device is disclosed. The device is of a type having first and second end fittings which define a major axis and which are selectively engageable and disengageable from matching first and second mountings spaced apart in the assembly in insulated relation. The device can be manipulated by a hookstick selectively attachable to the first end fitting and held by a human operator, and so manipulated as to selectively engage and disengage the end fittings and their respective mountings and to open and close the device. The second mounting has a noncircular pin which can be slideably received in a slot in the second end fitting only when the second end fitting and the device are in one particular orientation. The slot contains an enlargement which permits the second end fitting to rotate in the second mounting once the pin enters the enlargement. When the pin is in the enlargement, the device is freely rotatable to both the closed position and the opened position. A cradle, provided on the second mounting for supporting the device, is utilized at two times. First, the cradle supports the device when the second end fitting is being engaged with the second mounting. It performs such support function to automatically place the second end fitting in the one orientation in which it may slideably engage the end fitting. Second, the cradle arrests rotation of, and supports, the device following an opening operation during which the first end fitting is disengaged from the first mounting. Such arresting and support function also automatically aligns the pin in the slot so that the device may be removed from the second mounting.

The invention provides siRNA compositions that (1) interfere with viral replication of human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes simplex virus (HSV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in mucosal tissues, such as genital tissues, and (2) treat fungal infections. The compositions include siRNA molecules that target HPV, complexed with a dendrimer that treats and prevents genital herpes (HSV) and HIV. The compositions also include siRNA molecules that target HPV, complexed with a histidine-lysine (HK) polymer that treats and prevent fungus infection. The combined formulations of siRNA and dendrimer provide treatment of the infections from HPVs, HSVs, and HIVs. The combined formulations of siRNA and HK polymer provide treatment of HPVs and fungus infections.

An orthopaedic splint is provided for treatment of injury to the extensor tendon distal to the DIP joint in the finger, the splint serving to hold the DIP joint in hyperextension and the PIP joint in flexion, while allowing restrained extension of the PIP joint. The splint suitably involves first and second portions each including at least one plate curved to seat transversely over or under a finger, the first portion also being longitudinally inclined and provided with strapping to hold the DIP joint in hyperextension, and the portions being resiliently and hingedly interconnected to hold the PIP joint as required. This interconnection conveniently involves like springs on respectively opposite sides of the PIP joint, the springs preferably being of mutually parallel flat spiral form.
