An ignition device 11 for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine is to be designed so that it operates reliably even under conditions of vibration acceleration of the internal combustion engine. Ignition device 11 has, depending on the number of cylinders of the internal combustion engine, rod-shaped ignition coils 12. An end section 22 of each ignition coil 12 is formed by a part of a core 23 of ignition coil 12 that protrudes from a housing 20 of ignition coil 12. A damper 29 is mounted on the part of core 23. The other end section 21 of ignition coil 12 is formed by a high-voltage dome 27, which is mounted in a socket 39 made of elastic material and placed in a spark plug pit 15 of a cylinder head 13 of the internal combustion engine. Ignition device 11 is elastically held by fastening element 33 and secured at both end sections 21, 22 on cylinder head 13 of the internal combustion engine. The high voltage is transferred in an elastic manner to a corresponding spark plug 16 via a high-voltage contact element 48, designed as a spring.

Starting energy is applied with a pulse. For this purpose, a controllable switch which becomes conducting on reaching a certain voltage or is connected by a drive is provided in series with the primary winding. A capacitor connected in parallel to the series connection is charged by voltage U between the input terminals across a resistor connected in series and a diode. Interruption of current flow through the primary of any one of the winding groups will then not induce in the secondary of the other winding group a voltage high enough to cause spark-over at the other secondary; free-wheeling diodes (14, 22), connected across the primaries, can suppress current flow in the primary not being interrupted; and diodes (12, 13; 25, 26), serially connected with spark plugs, likewise suppress spurious spark-over.

The fastening arrangement for electrical connection to an ignition coil includes a housing; an epoxy resin circuit board in the housing and having a plurality of conductor paths electrically insulated from each other, each of which are provided with at least two ends having a bore hole for electrical connection to the primary windings; and a connection plug including elements for easily securing it to the housing and a plurality of electrical contacts extending from an exterior side of the plug and into the housing on an interior side. The housing is provided with a recess to accommodate the connection plug and a guide groove in the recess in which a projecting guide element of an outer peripheral flange of the connecting plug is pressed to fix the connection plug to the housing. The electrical contacts are electrically insulated from each other and each of them includes a pin on its interior end. The pins of the electrical contacts project through respective bore holes in the conductor paths and are soldered with the respective conductor paths so that the connection plug and the printed circuit board form a primary plug unit for making electrical connection to the ignition coil.

In order to isolate the electrical components of a ballast (12) or a power supply apparatus (10) during the starting process, a reactor (13) which is constructed as a saturable reactor is provided in the ballast. The inductance of the saturable reactor is reduced by the operating current flowing after starting of the lamp (11). The device according to the invention is particularly suitable for starting high-pressure gas discharge lamps, the starting power of the lamp (11) made available by the starting device (14) being made virtually completely available.

A high-voltage distributor for an ignition system of an internal combustion engine has a distributor cap (10) of insulating material and a distributor rotor (14), which rotates in a distributor housing (11). A center electrode (12) and several fixed electrodes (13) are arranged in the distributor cap (10). The distributor rotor (14), which rotates synchronously with the camshaft of the internal combustion engine, in each case establishes an electrical connection between the center electrode (12) and one of the fixed electrodes (13) during its rotation around an axis of rotation (15). To achieve a long wearing contact between the center electrode (12) and the rotor electrode (16), the distributor rotor (14) carries a dome (20), which is coaxial to the distributor rotor and in which a carbon contacting body (24) is held slidably in a tight fit in a centrally located cylindrical guide therein. The carbon contacting body (24) is pressed with its front end, carrying a convex portion (25) with a tip, against the center electrode by a compression spring (23), which is supported on the rotor electrode (16). The distributor rotor has an integral annular wall surrounding the dome spaced a distance therefrom, which protrudes axially beyond a free end of the dome.
