Abstract: An improved transparent lubricating oil composition, e.g., useful as a high severity metal cutting oil, comprises a major amount of oil of lubricating viscosity; a minor, effective amount of at least one sulfur-containing compound; and a minor, effective amount of elemental sulfur. Both the sulfur-containing compound and the sulfur are present in amounts to be soluble in the composition and the combination of sulfur-containing compound and elemental sulfur is present in an amount effective to improve the extreme pressure properties of the composition.Improved methods of metal working using such compositions are also disclosed.
