    Abstract: This invention relates to a combined surface treating and polishing and suction cleaning apparatus having rotatable brushes movable over a surface. A movable control shutter in a first position covers an opening in the air passageway of the suction cleaning component of the apparatus so that it will operate properly as a suction cleaner. When the control shutter is in its first position mechanism for dispensing liquid wax from a container onto the surface is rendered inoperable. When the control shutter is in its first position a vessel for holding a body of liquid treating agent cannot be removably mounted on the apparatus for dispensing such liquid onto the surface. In the second position of the control shutter the opening in the passageway of the suction cleaning component is uncovered so that atmospheric air will be drawn into the air passageway by a fan and the apparatus cannot operate properly as a suction cleaner. When the control shutter is in its second position the mechanism for dispensing liquid wax from its container is rendered operable. When the control shutter is in its second position the vessel for the liquid treating agent can be removably mounted on the apparatus for dispensing such agent onto the surface. The mechanism for dispensing wax from its container and the mechanism for dispensing liquid treating agent from the vessel include parts which are common to both mechanisms, such parts operating in one way to dispense liquid wax from its container when the vessel for liquid treating agent is not mounted on the apparatus and operating in another way to dispense liquid treating agent from the vessel when it is mounted on the apparatus.

    Abstract: Our invention relates to surface-cleaning apparatus having a housing which is adapted to hold a body of liquid that generates foam when air bubbles therethrough. A surface-contacting member, which is carried by the housing and is movable over a surface, functions to distribute foam. Air under pressure is delivered from a source of supply to the inlet of an air line which is located exteriorly of the housing. The outlet of the air line is located within the housing at its bottom and connected to a device to form air bubbles which rise through the body of liquid to generate foam. Foam is conducted through a passageway from the upper part of the housing to the surface-contacting member. A conventional household suction cleaner can be conveniently used as the source of supply of air under pressure. In order to generate foam in the apparatus which is relatively dry and not excessively moist, the air inlet end of the air line is connected to the blowing end of suction cleaner by a coupling which may be referred to as a bypass valve and functions to divert and bleed to the atmosphere a major portion of the air discharged from the blowing end of the suction cleaner. In this way the rate at which air under pressure is delivered to the bottom of the housing through the air line will be correct to generate foam that is relatively dry.
