Abstract: Methods and systems for hydrodeoxygenating a bio-derived feedstock during the production of renewable diesel and generating renewable power as part of the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process are provided herein. One method includes providing an HDO catalyst within either a shell or tube side of an isothermal HDO reactor including a shell-and-tube configuration and exposing a bio-derived feedstock to the HDO catalyst within the isothermal HDO reactor to form an HDO reactor effluent. The method also includes flowing a water stream through the opposite side of the isothermal HDO reactor as compared to the side including the HDO catalyst to remove the heat of reaction between the bio-derived feedstock and the HDO catalyst, where the removal of the heat of reaction using the water stream forms steam. The method further includes flowing the steam through a steam turbine to provide for the generation of renewable power.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for producing renewable diesel. Disclosed herein is an example method of method for integration of product separation in renewable diesel production, including: stripping a hydrotreated effluent stream comprising hydrotreated biofeedstock to remove isomerization contaminants and form at least an isomerization feed stream and a first gas stream; contacting an isomerization effluent with the first gas stream such that the isomerization effluent adsorbs at least C4+ hydrocarbons from the first gas stream; and stripping at least a portion of an isomerization effluent in an integrated stripper while separated from the stripping the hydrocarbon stream by a dividing wall to remove hydrocarbons having 10 carbons or less and form at least a product stream and a second gas stream, wherein the product stream comprises renewable diesel.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for performing hydrodeoxygenation of bio-derived feeds while maintaining the hydrodeoxygenation catalyst in a sulfided state. During hydrodeoxygenation, a hydrogen-containing stream is provided to the hydrodeoxygenation reactor as a hydrogen treat gas to provide hydrogen for the reaction. In some aspects, the hydrogen treat gas used for hydrodeoxygenation can be formed at least in part from hydrogen that has been used as a stripping gas for removing H2S from a rich amine stream. In other aspects, H2S can be stripped using water vapor, and a resulting overhead HS stream can be compressed prior to incorporation of the H2S into a hydrogen-containing stream. The resulting hydrogen-containing stream can include sufficient H2S to substantially maintain the catalyst in the hydrodeoxygenation stage in a sulfided state.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for hydroprocessing of bio-derived feeds, such as bio-oils and/or other types of feeds including triglycerides, fatty acids, and/or fatty acid derivatives. The systems and methods can assist with maintaining a desired temperature profile within a reactor while performing hydroprocessing on a feed with substantial oxygen content. In various aspects, the initial bed of the reactor can be exposed to 30 vol % or less of the total fresh feed. The remaining portions of the fresh feed can be introduced below one or more of the catalyst beds in the reactor. By reducing or minimizing the amount of fresh feed introduced upstream from the initial catalyst bed that contains a catalyst with hydrodeoxygenation activity, the net amount of product recycle can be reduced or minimized while still maintaining a target temperature profile across individual catalyst beds and/or across the reactor.
