    摘要: An apparatus (20) determines a target (e.g., a vehicle occupant 22) beyond a predetermined distance. In an exemplary embodiment, the apparatus (20) determines a distant target for use in control of air bag deployment. The apparatus (20) includes a sensor (44) for emitting and receiving first (52, 56) and second (54, 58) signals in an interspersed predetermined emission sequence toward the target. A controller (60) successively determines a time interval between the emission of a current signal and the reception of an echo. The controller (60) successively compares at least two time intervals to determine whether a sufficient difference exists to indicate that the target is beyond the predetermined distance and outputs a signal to the air bag actuation system (62). The controller (60) also performs a distance calculation to the target using at least one of the time-of-flight periods of the first and second signals, where the first time-of-flight period occurs between emission and echo reception of the first signal and where the second time-of-flight period occurs between emission and echo reception of the second signal, and outputs a signal to the air bag actuation system (62).

    摘要: An intrusion detection system that differentiates between a vehicle intrusion event and a non-intrusion event includes transmitter (16) for transmitting a continuous wave signal that is reflected of surfaces within the vehicle's interior and/or a moving object (i.e., an intruder). The associated reflected signals subsequently return to a receiver (18). An ECU (26) demodulates the return signal into frequency and amplitude components. The ECU (26) further determines a waveform envelope of the demodulated return signals and monitors the envelope waveform during time windows to determine whether their corresponding envelope waveform is indicative of an intrusion event or an non-intrusion event. When an intrusion event is detected, the ECU (26) outputs a control signal to actuate an alarm (34).

    摘要: An apparatus (42) determines distance to an object (12), and preferably the object is a vehicle occupant. A sensor (40) of the apparatus (42) senses distance to the occupant (12) at a sensor rate. A rate determination function portion (74) of a controller (30) varies the sensor rate as a function of the sensed distance. Preferably, the sensor (40) emits signals (46) at the sensor rate toward the occupant (12) and receives reflected signals from the occupant. A time between emission of a signal and reception of an associated reflected signal is used to determine a distance to the occupant (12) at a distance determination function portion (54) of the controller (30). Change in the rate of signal emission is in response to each change in determined distance and is continuous with the change in determined distance. Preferably, the apparatus is part of an occupant protection system (10) for a vehicle (16). A portion (60) of the controller (30) makes determinations regarding control of a protection device (18) of the system (10) using the sensed distance.

The vehicle seat frame (42) moves vertically relative to the support mount (60) as the weight load on the vehicle seat frame (42) changes. The lever (70) has a first end (72) and a second end (74) opposite the first end (72). The lever (70) is rotatably attached to the vehicle seat frame (42) and rotatably attached to the support mount (60). The lever (70) has a portion (76) which bends when the weight load of the vehicle occupant (14) is transmitted by the lever (70) from the vehicle seat frame (42) to the support mount (60). The sensor (80) detects bending of the portion (76) of the lever (70) and provides an output weight signal indicative of the amount of bending of the portion (76) of the lever (70).
