Abstract: A rotary stream sprinkler unit comprises a housing having a water flow passage in which is disposed a flow control unit having one or more passages configured to control the volume and pressure of a stream, which strikes and rotates a self-propelled rotary distributor head rotatably mounted at the outlet of the housing for dividing each stream into a plurality of final streams, and rotating each of the final streams through a selected arc during the rotation of the rotary head, with a damping device in the housing connected to the rotary head by means of a shaft supported by a resilient member at the outlet for controlling the rotational velocity thereof.

Abstract: A fluid pressure activated mechanism in a rollable side wheel irrigating device allows gravity to maintain the sprinkler head portion of the device perpendicular or level to the ground as the device is rolled in position, and prevents nozzle pressure from moving the sprinkler head once fluid has entered the irrigation device after it has been positioned. The side wheel irrigating device includes an irrigation conduit within a horizontally-disposed axle member attached to two wheels. The conduit extends through the axle at its mid-point and routes irrigating fluid to a gravity-biased sprinkler conduit supporting a sprinkler head. The mechanism is attached between the two conduits, with the mechanism being rigidly attached to the irrigation conduit. The sprinkler conduit is attached to an annular hub and allowed rotative and translative movement in the mechanism housing. Prior to fluid of sufficient pressure entering the mechanism housing, the sprinkler conduit is free to rotate under the force of gravity. As fluid enters the housing, a pressure differential is created across the annular hub as the fluid pressure on the housing inlet side of the hub increases relative to the atmospheric pressure on the housing outlet side of the hub. The pressure differential thereafter causes the axial translation of the hub until a sharp ridge of the hub frictionally engages a rubber washer. The frictional engagement prevents rotation of the sprinkler conduit, and thus of the sprinkler head, as long as the flow of irrigation fluid continues.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a sprinkler head for use in drip irrigation systems. Irrigation fluid entering an inlet is directed through a path comprising a plurality of pressure dropping chambers before emerging through irrigation tubings connected to outlet openings from where the irrigation fluid emerges at a low pressure drip irrigation flow rate. In the preferred embodiment disclosed, the pressure dropping chambers comprise a plurality of series interconnected vortices disposed within stacked plates. The entire assembly can be disassembled for cleaning purposes. The assembly further incorporates an integral pressure regulator for performing an initial step decrease in the pressure of the irrigation fluid before the fluid enters the multiple chambered pressure dropping path. The integral pressure regulator is adjustable and calibrated in gallon per hour flow rates.

Abstract: A stream rotor sprinkler having a rotatable nozzle assembly for discharging a stream of fluid, and a rotatable plurality of deflectors mounted to the sprinkler surrounding the nozzle assembly. A water-driven motor impeller is activated by fluid flow through the sprinkler and rotates an attached rotor. The nozzle assembly is integrally attached to the rotor and is rotated thereby. The nozzle assembly includes an annular skirt at its lower end; the deflectors also have an integrally attached annular skirt which is in horizontal concentric relationship with the nozzle assembly skirt. A transmission is mounted to the sprinkler so as to be positioned between the deflector skirt and the nozzle assembly skirt. The transmission is driven by the rotation of the nozzle assembly skirt and in turn rotates the deflector skirt. The nozzle assembly rotates at an angular velocity different than the angular velocity of the deflectors so that the deflectors are not in the same position when the nozzle returns to a given position so that the circumferential coverage of fluid is substantially uniform.

Abstract: An improved backflow preventing valve having an inlet passage opening to an intermediate chamber via an improved inlet check valve with the intermediate chamber opening to an outlet passage via an improved outlet check valve. A diaphragm chamber communicates with the intermediate chamber having a diaphragm therein dividing the diaphragm chamber into an inlet pressure portion opening into the inlet passage and an intermediate pressure portion opening to the intermediate chamber. An exhaust passage opening to atmosphere communicates with the intermediate pressure portion whereby fluid normally flows from the inlet passage through the intermediate chamber to the outlet passage but upon attempted backflow of the fluid, the improved check valves close with a positive closing action to prevent such backflow and, upon failure of the outlet check valve, the diaphragm flexes to open to vent such backflowing fluid out the exhaust passage. Before failure of the outlet check valve, an improved relief valve associated with the diaphragm compensates for slight flexing of the diaphragm to prevent fluid spitting due to slight changes in the pressure of the incoming fluid while permitting fluid to be subsequently exhausted out of the exhaust passage.

Abstract: Improvements in sprinkler systems having fluid under pressure flowing therethrough and a sprinkler head with a pop-up nozzle actuated by fluid pressure. An impeller is actuated by the fluid flow to rotate the nozzle and thus rotate the spray of fluid threfrom. A transmission is disposed between the impeller and the nozzle for transmitting rotation of the impeller to the nozzle. Means are provided for regulating the rate of rotation of the impeller, and then the nozzle, under varying volume flow of fluid being sprayed thereout. This may be accomplished by a substantially constant velocity of incoming fluid impinging on impeller blades. This velocity may be maintained substantially constant by a variable resistance valve in association with a stationary stator having blades thereon which valve moves with respect to the stator to provide a guided substantially constant velocity of jets of fluid on the impeller blades to rotate the same which in turn rotates the nozzle at a substantially constant rate of rotation.
