摘要:
A printing arrangement can include an ink-receiving coating applied to a media substrate, the ink-receiving coating having a coating thickness being configured to have a concentration gradient relative to the thickness. In the concentration gradient, the concentration of a cationic agent is greater in a center region of the ink-receiving coating relative to an upper region and a lower region.

Methods and apparatuses are provided for use in printing devices. In certain implementations, ink is printed to a first area of a print medium and a second area of the print medium. The ink is applied to the first area at a higher density than the second area. A first light scattering intensity value is measured from the first area and a second light scattering intensity value is measured from the second area. The print medium is categorized based on a comparison of the light scattering intensity values.

A non-absorbing barrier layer for photographic printing paper includes a non-polyolefin resin. A photographic printing paper includes a base substrate; a image receiving layer and a barrier layer comprising a non-polyolefin resin coated on the base substrate. A method of making a photographic printing paper includes coating a barrier layer comprising a non-polyolefin resin on a base substrate. Another method of making a photographic printing paper includes forming a barrier layer on a base substrate using reactive monomers.

A recording medium includes a base substrate, a fusible layer including a first set of polymeric beads and a second set of polymeric beads, and an ink receiving layer disposed between the base substrate and the fusible layer. The first set of polymeric beads has an average volume-based particle size less than two microns. The second set of polymeric beads has an average volume-based particle size equal to or greater than five microns. The fusible layer includes a weight percent of the second set of polymeric beads of at least three percent.

A process is provided that allows the production of multi-layer coatings in which one or more topcoats can be applied to a porous basecoat to produce a uniform and defect-free coating layer. Specifically, a process is provided in which a liquid is applied to the basecoat prior to topcoating such that the air in the basecoat is removed prior to topcoating. This process can occur in-line with a simple apparatus described herein. An added benefit of this method is that it also allows the possibility of adding functionality or performing chemistry to a basecoat after the basecoat is dried and before the topcoat is applied in a single process. For example, the wetting fluid may contain, but is not limited to, surfactants, pH modifiers, polymers, crosslinkers, pigments, and/or dye stabilizers. Advantages over what has been done before include the use of re-wetting process that allows a topcoat to be applied to a porous basecoat that is coated on a non-porous substrate such that bubbles are not formed in the topcoat. In addition, there is added flexibility of incorporating functionality or chemistry in the re-wetting process. Finally, the process is simple to implement and is compatible with many general coating methods, such as slot-die coating, rod coating, blade coating, gravure coating, knife-over-roll coating, or the like.

The present invention is drawn to a composition for cast-coating on ink-jet media. The composition includes a liquid vehicle, silica particulates, and an internal release agent. The composition is substantially free of polymeric binder and can improve the glossiness of a porous particulate-coated ink-receiving media by at least 2 gloss units at 20 degrees. The silica particulates can be suspended in the liquid vehicle at about 1-35 wt %, and can have a particle size of less than about 150 nm. The internal release agent can be present at about 0.5-10 wt %.

A method of forming a print medium having porous and swellable properties. The method includes providing a coating formulation that has at least 50% by weight of crosslinked organic particles. The crosslinked organic particles have a particle size of less than approximately 1 μm. The coating formulation is then applied to a substrate. The crosslinked organic particles may be formed from polyvinylalcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, gelatin, polyester, polyamine, polyimide, starch, cellulose, polyethylene oxide, polypropylene oxide, and mixtures thereof. The crosslinked organic particles may be formulated to absorb at least two times their weight of water. A print medium utilizing the crosslinked organic particles is also disclosed.

A print medium for ink-jet printing comprises a base substrate, a micro-porous ink-receiving layer, and a backing layer. The base substrate can include raw base paper and a moisture barrier layer between the raw base paper and ink receiving layer. The ink-receiving layer can be a micro-porous type, and can be applied onto the moisture barrier at the first side of the base substrate and the backing layer can be applied to a second side of the base substrate. The backing layer can include an extruded coated polymer layer and can be configured to transport solvent vapor to the base substrate at the rate of at least 15 g/m2/24 hr.
