A co-rotating twin-screw kneader has a casing which has two axially parallel bores, defined by the casing wall and which intersect with one another in a region to form gussets in said casing wall adjacent the intersecting region. Two axially parallel shafts which are arranged to be driven in the same direction of rotation are each arranged in a respective one of the bores and multi-flight kneading disks having crests associated with the casing wall are mounted in non-rotary manner on at least part of the length of each shaft. Each kneading disk on one shaft is associated with another disk on the other shaft in a plane perpendicular to the axes of the shafts and the disks are arranged to be moved past one another in a virtually clearance-free manner in the intersecting region of the bores.In order to achieve maximum flow rates and optimum melt homogeneity of material by using constructionally simple measures, the casing wall is dimensioned in such a way relative to the kneading disks, accompanied by the formation of a definite clearance between the casing wall and the crests on the kneading disk, but ##EQU1## in which Dg=diameter of the boresa=center-to-center distance of the boresn=number of flights on each kneading disk.

Screw elements intermeshing kneading disks are fixed on the shafts The widths of the respective crest portions of the kneading disks are smaller than the disk width and form mixing-and-scraping-studs on the periphery of the disks. The mixing-and-scraping-studs on each kneading disk are axially misaligned relative to each other such that their peripheral faying surfaces jointly cover the entire disk width.

A throttling device for a twin-shaft screw-type extruder, the housing of which is provided with bores parallel to one another and passing through one another forming saddles, has a transfer channel in each bore-defining wall, which channels are in a staggered arrangement relative to one another in the conveying direction. Retaining plates having cylindrical outer surfaces are arranged on the shaft mounted in each bore, which retaining plates can be arranged to overlap with the transfer channels so that no throttling action occurs. On the other hand, they can be brought partly to fully into axial overlapping with the wall of the respective cylindrical bores, whereby flow restricting gaps are formed between the cylindrical outer surface and each wall, the throttling effect of these gaps depending on the degree of overlapping. An operationally reliable throttling device having a linear characteristic is created by this development.

A screw extruder mechanism for the processing of strongly outgassing materials comprises a main extruder for proper material processing, a material feed and discharge device and a degassing device on the main extruder for the discharge of the gas stream from the portion of evaporation. For the gas stream to branch into at least three separate streams, the degassing device comprises a first degassing port and at least two degassing elements which are opposed radially to each other in relation to the main extruder and are disposed between the portion of evaporation and the first degassing port and which are designed preferably as ancillary screw extruders opening radially into the main extruder.
