摘要: A method of determining an inclusive residual risk that a pregnancy is affected by at least one phenotypic disorder included in a disorder set is provided. The method includes calculating a prior risk for a disorder set, calculating posterior risks for the individual disorders or groups of disorders in the disorder set that can be screened for and/or diagnosed prenatally, and calculating an inclusive residual risk for the disorder set by combining the prior risks for disorders for which no tests have been performed and the individual posterior risks.

摘要: An optical disc has spatial features (notches, bumps, etc.) that intentionally distort the analog Read Data signal. For a mark or space that is centered on a spatial feature, the distortion does not affect the resulting binary Read Data signal. If an edge of a mark or space is near the spatial feature, the resulting binary Read Data signal is altered. For calibration, marks or spaces are written adjacent to spatial features, with a range of times for initiating the writes. The result is a range of write times that do not alter the binary Read Data signal. From these known times and spatial locations, it is known when a mark or space must be written to ensure accurate spatial placement.

摘要: A magnetic head suspension assembly and method are designed to include a substantially inflexible support arm mounted at one end to an actuator motor in a data storage disk drive system. At the opposite end of the support arm is a gimbal. An air bearing slider having at least one read/write head is connected to the gimbal. The gimbal is adapted to accommodate pitch and roll motion and is compliant in the direction perpendicular to a surface of the data storage medium to be read. The gimbal is parallel-coupled with a load spring that is connected to the support arm to apply a load force. This arrangement improves the shock-resistance characteristics of the suspension assembly, since the support arm does not add to the inertial force caused by accelerations from shock events. In a preferred embodiment, the electrical connection to the read/write head is via electrical traces that are printed onto the support arm and gimbal. Traces are also formed on the gimbal springs to extend to a solder-reflow location at an interface to the slider.

摘要: A photonic crystal drop filter apparatus and a method for tuning a photonic crystal drop filter. The photonic crystal drop filter has a photonic crystal having first waveguide for transmitting light having a frequency within a bandgap of the photonic crystal, and a second waveguide. The second waveguide is connected to the first waveguide by a resonant cavity for extracting at least one wavelength of the light transmitted by the first waveguide and redirecting the extracted light to the second waveguide. A tuning device is included in the apparatus to tune the wavelength of the extracted light over a full range of wavelengths. The apparatus is particularly suitable as an extraction device for optical communications systems such as a WDM communications system wherein it is necessary to extract one or more carrier signals from a plurality of carrier signals.
