摘要: The present invention relates to an optical modifier, in which single or several wavelength channels are fed into or fed out of transmission and/or receiving elements including, for example, wave guides. In order to fabricate an optical modifier that can intentionally affect one or more wavelength channels, that is inexpensive to manufacture, that allows as low loss as possible feed-in and feed-out of light in the smallest of spaces, and wherein at the same time the optical modifier is easy to calibrate, it is proposed according to the invention that at least one coupling device (20) with a curved surface (8) and a wave-modifying element (19) are provided. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for manufacturing an optical modifier, wherein the reflecting surface (8) is manufactured as part of a surface of revolution with a cone section as the curve generating the envelope.

摘要: Optical signal interleaver/deinterleavers with reduced chromatic dispersion are described. In one embodiment, the interleaver/deinterleavers include two optical filters and an optical isolator coupled to receive the output of each of the optical filters. The optical isolators feed the filtered signals back to the filters. Passing the filtered signals back through the filters in the opposite direction as the first pass allows the filters to cancel, or nearly cancel, the chromatic dispersion caused by the filters on the first pass. Thus, the interleaver/deinterleavers provide reduced chromatic dispersion as compared to use of a single filter or of cascaded filters.

摘要: A method for compensating for higher-order dispersion of an incoming optical communications signal in accordance with the present invention includes the steps of compensating the signal for first order polarization mode dispersion; compensating the signal for second order polarization mode dispersion; and compensating the signal for variable chromatic dispersion. Additionally, the method may include the steps of compensation for fixed chromatic dispersion and controlling the polarization of the incoming signal. The signal may be monitored after the compensating steps and the degree of compensation may be tuned based on the monitoring. The step of compensating the signal for first order polarization mode dispersion may include the steps of controlling the polarization of the signal; splitting the signal into a first and a second orthogonal polarization components; reflecting the first polarization component in a fixed linearly chirped grating; reflecting the second polarization component in a tuned linearly chirped grating; and recombining the first and the second polarization components.

摘要: An optical switch device includes a rolling shutter or membrane attached at one of its edges to a substrate near an optical port in the substrate. The rolling shutter can assume one of two states. In a first closed state, the membrane is uncoiled onto the substrate over the port such that light directed at the port impinges on the shutter. In a second open state, the membrane is rolled up away from the port such that light directed at the port impinges on the port. In one embodiment, a mirror is formed on the membrane such that when the membrane is in the closed state over the substrate, light directed at the port is reflected by the mirror. In one configuration, the optical port includes a hole or aperture such light passed through the port without interference. The device can include a latch electrode the far end of the membrane such that when it is rolled out, it can be held in position by a latching voltage applied across the latch electrode and the substrate. Slits can be formed in the membrane to keep the mirror flat by relieving strain in the membrane and to allow gases in proximity to the device to pass through the membrane as it is activated. The shutter can include dimples to minimize the area of contact between the membrane and the substrate to reduce the probability of the two sticking together. The attachment edge of the membrane can be made shorter than its width to reduce distortions in the membrane to keep the mirror flat. A raised annular rim can be provided around the port such that when the shutter is held down over the port it is pulled taut and flat over the rim. This feature is also used to maintain flatness in the mirror. The switch device can be used as part of an array of optical switches.

摘要: An optical fiber, a mixture solution of the photosetting resins polymerizing in two different polymerization types, and a transparent container are prepared. The photosetting resins are not copolymerized, and have different activation wavelengths of the photopolymerization initiators for hardening. Employing a combination in which the activation wavelength of a photopolymerization initiator for a photosetting resin with higher refractive index after hardening is longer than the activation wavelength of a photopolymerization initiator for a photosetting resin with lower refractive index after hardening, a core portion can be only formed by hardening the photosetting resin with higher refractive index due to a difference between two wavelengths. Thereafter, a clad portion can be formed by hardening two kinds of photosetting resins, whereby an optical transmission device can be manufactured.
