Abstract:
This invention is an improved process of making azidodeoxycellulose a hig energetic ingredient for use in a propellant. The process is accomplished by nitrating cellulose to nitrocellulose, converting the nitrocellulose in sequence to the iodine derivative, and finally reacting the iodine derivative of cellulose with sodium azide to produce azidodeoxycellulose having up to about 1.5% residual nitrogen as nitrate groups.
Abstract:
Novel energetic sulfate salts which form a eutectic with ammonium nitrate ntaining explosive formulations are disclosed. The eutectic quality of such formulations facilitates melt loading thereof. Two typical novel sulfate salts of the invention are 1-(2-ammonium sulfatoethyl)-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene and 1,3-Bis-2(2-ammonium sulfoethyl)-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene. Also disclosed is a method for the synthesis of such sulfate salts together also with a method for the synthesis of the necessary alkanol substituted trinitrobenzene derivative precursor.
Abstract:
Novel compounds are provided having the formula ##SPC1##Wherein R is hydrogen or lower n-alkyl and the ether oxygen atoms are attached in the 1,3 or 1,4 positions to the R substituted benzene rings, R being in the 2 or 5 positions when the ether oxygen atoms are in the 1,3 positions and R is lower n-alkyl.These compounds are useful as explosives characterized by good thermal stability.

Abstract:
A process for preparing 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrostilbene in high yields byeacting 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrobibenzyl in a suitable solvent with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst is selected from the group consisting of copper ammino and cobalt ammino compounds, copper and cobalt acetates, copper and cobalt halides, copper sulfate, and ammonium and alkali metal bases.
Abstract:
2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrobibenzyl, an intermediate compound used for makingexanitrostilbene, is prepared by adding an aqueous alkaline metal hypochlorite solution containing an alkaline metal hydroxide to trinitrotoluene dispersed in a single solvent selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, 2-methoxyethanol, isopropanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, N,N-dimethylformamide, N,N-dimethylacetamide, pyridine and N-methyl pyrrolidinone. The compound is then separated from the reaction mixture.
Abstract:
There is disclosed a process for converting 2,2', 4,4', 6,6'-hexanitrobibyl (HNBB) to 2,2', 4,4', 6,6'-hexanitrostilbene (HNS) by reacting HNBB with a copper ammino compound in a solvent. The HNS product can be produced in yields of greater than 65%.
