Abstract: The present disclosure relates to methods for preparing materials from heavy feedstocks. In particular, the disclosure provides a chemical process to convert heavy feedstocks with predominant polyaromatic hydrocarbon molecules or species, including the residues of petrochemical refining or extraction, into thermoset or thermoplastic materials that can be used alone or as a component in a composite material.

Abstract: Processes and systems for producing olefin epoxides with three or more carbon atoms by oxidation of the corresponding branched hydrocarbons using oxygen are disclosed. An example process for producing olefin epoxides may include oxidizing a branched alkane to produce at least an organic hydroperoxide. The example process may further include epoxidizing a branched alkene by a catalytic reaction with least a portion of the organic hydroperoxide to produce at least an olefin epoxide and an alcohol. The example process may further include converting at least a portion of the alcohol to either additional branched alkane and/or additional branched alkene.

Abstract: Processes for chemically treating polyaromatic feedstock to form aromatic-containing oligomers or polymers are provided. The processes are characterized by treatment of a plurality of different polyaromatic hydrocarbon molecules and/or polyheterocyclic molecules present in polyaromatic feedstock with a first reagent so as to functionalize the molecules. Further treatment in a second step affords oligomeric or polymeric products which may be crosslinked. The products may be thermoplastic or thermoset materials and may find use in, for example, infrastructure applications, composites, fillers, fire retardants and 3-D printing materials.

Abstract: This disclosure describes a new route to acrylate esters via direct catalytic partial oxidation of allyl ether using heterogeneous manganese oxide catalysts. The method involves forming allyl acrylate by contacting allyl ether, where the allyl ether is in solution with a solvent, with one or more oxidants in the presence of a mesoporous manganese oxide (MnOx) catalyst. Oxygen or peroxide can be used as the oxidant. The yield of and selectivity for acrylate ester can be very high, and process efficiency is improved over current processes.
