Abstract: Provided herein are methods of making metal-organic frameworks comprising combining a first pre-ligand and at least one of a second pre-ligand or a first ligand with a metal source comprising a metal component to provide a plurality of reactants where at least 50 wt % of the reaction mixture is the plurality of reactants after solvent has been added to the plurality of reactants. Also provided herein are methods of making metal-organic frameworks comprising combining a pre-ligand with a metal source selected from metal acetates, metal hydroxyacetates, metal carbonates, metal hydroxycarbonates, and mixtures thereof.

Abstract: Methods are provided for appending amines to metal organic framework (MOF) compositions. In some aspects, the methods can allow for appending of amines in the solution or synthesis solution used for synthesizing a MOF. In such aspects, an amine-appended MOF can be formed without having to first separate and dry the underlying non-amine-appended MOF composition. In other aspects, amines can be appended to an existing MOF composition by exposing the MOF to a suitable amine in a protic solvent, such as water or an alcohol.

Abstract: Provided herein are post-synthesis methods of thermally stabilizing a metal-organic framework having defects that decomposes after about 12 hours at a first temperature. The methods include contacting the metal-organic framework with a stabilizing solution to provide a treated metal-organic framework. The treated metal-organic framework is thermally stable after 12 hours at a second temperature at least about 50° C. greater than the first temperature. Also, the treated metal-organic framework has a PXRD pattern that is substantially the same as the PXRD pattern of the untreated metal-organic framework. Provided herein are also post-synthesis methods to improve CO2 adsorption of metal-organic frameworks. Provided herein are also modified EMM-71 metal-organic frameworks.

Abstract: Methods of making metal-organic frameworks in yields of at least about 50 percent by volume of metal-organic frameworks in a metal-organic framework material per liter of synthesis solution and/or about 75 molar percent of metal-organic frameworks in a metal-organic framework material are provided. Methods of making MOF Cu(Qc)2 in aqueous solutions are further provided where a solvent composition of less than about 30% volume water is combined with a buffer and a plurality of reagents to provide the synthesis solution.
