The present invention concerns a process for the production of alginate having a mannuronic add-content of at least 80 mole %, wherein said alginate is produced by: a) adding algae or seaweed to water under stirring, in a ratio of 1:3 to 1:20 respectively, at a pH above about 2.3, while maintaining a temperature above 20 ° C. for at least 30 minutes, and b) separating said alginate from the solid material of the suspension in a) by a standard separation method such as filtration, and optionally c) recovering said alginate from the solution.
