摘要: A self shift type gas discharge panel in which the display screen comprises a plurality of shift lines arranged in parallel in the vertical direction, and a system and method for driving the panel. The display screen is divided into several sections both in the horizontal and vertical directions to form a plurality of display areas, and the shift operation can be performed independently in each of these display areas. While the forward shift operation is conducted in a single selected display area, a reciprocating or sway shift operation, or a stationary display, obtain selectively in the remaining display areas with such a configuration, so that an editing operation can be realized which is similar to that realized by the existing well known matrix display gas discharge panel. As a result, the display function can be much improved.

摘要: Methods and systems for driving a self-shift type of gas discharge panel utilize a plurality of basic pulse trains for the shifting of discharge spots. The pulse trains are applied cyclically and sequentially to each phase of a multi-phase display cell array, each cycle comprising several unit periods, and the array having regularity in its arrangement. This facilitates control of timing for phase switching, and accurate shift operation can be realized by variation of the basic pulse trains.

摘要: An improved row selecting and driving system for a self-shift type gas discharge panel for providing a multi-row display in a plurality of shift rows. The shift row is composed of at least one shift channel having a regular arrangement of a plurality of discharge cells, each said discharge cell comprising opposing electrode groups of 2.times.2 or more phases. A shift voltage is sequentially applied to the electrode groups of a selected shift row for shifting discharge spots in that row in one direction. At the same time, a shift voltage having a different sequence of voltages from that for said selected shift row is applied to the electrode group of the non-selected shifting rows, in a sway shift operation performed within a predetermined spatial period of the cell arrangement to hold said discharge spot in said cell arrangement period. The driving system can equalize the operation margin in all of the selected and non-selected shift rows, and as a result, display quality can be improved.

摘要: An improved driving system and method for shifting a discharge spot from a given discharge cell to an adjacent discharge cell in an A.C. gas discharge, or plasma display, panel, having opposed sets of electrodes respectively covered with corresponding dielectric layers thereby insulated from the discharge gas space. One set of electrodes comprises common electrodes extending in parallel relationship and defining the direction of propagation of the shifted discharge spots. The other set of electrodes, spaced apart from the first set by the gas space, extends in parallel relation transversely to the first common electrodes, and comprise the shift electrodes. The shift electrodes are arranged in groups of a predetermined number in each group and a corresponding number of buses permits selective application of shift pulses to the respectively associated shift electrodes in sequence for each group and simultaneously for the successive groups. An improved operating margin for the shift function is achieved by utilizing the priming discharge effect of a given cell currently discharging, to reduce the necessary firing voltage at an adjacent discharge cell to which the current discharge spot is to be shifted, while minimizing the probability of misfiring at corresponding, remote cells energized in the same phases. An overlap pulse is applied to a discharge cell at which a discharge spot currently is established, to provide a priming discharge for the adjacent cell to which the spot is to be shifted. A shift pulse applied to the adjacent cell terminates after termination of the overlap pulse and thereby produces a lateral field between the two adjacent discharge cells whereby the space charge generated by the priming discharge is attracted to and reduces the necessary firing voltage at the adjacent cell. The duration of the overlap pulse in relation to the amplitude of the shift pulse defines an operating margin for the shift operation which is optimized over a preferred range of the overlap pulse duration.
