Abstract:
A liquid metal collector of the type having a stationary conductor blade immersed in a rotating volume of liquid metal has improved electrical characteristics through the incorporation of a circumferential groove which is positioned in the conductor blade so as to provide a relatively quiescent area of liquid metal. An annular pad of molybdenum may be positioned in the groove in order to further enhance the electrical characteristics of the liquid metal collector.
Abstract:
In a system for detecting overheating in a generator by sensing the presence of sub-micron decomposition particles present in the generator cooling gas, a test device is included in the detector flow path for selectively introducing sub-micron particles to check the performance of the detector and the effectiveness of the filter. The test device includes a filament coated with polymeric material and a timed switch for passing a current through the filament to heat it.
Abstract:
In a gas-cooled dynamoelectric machine, organic coatings and insulations give off submicron pyrolysis particles and gaseous products when overheated. The particles and gases are carried by the machine gas coolant through a sampling and analyzing apparatus which includes a gas chromatographic device. Readings taken from the gas chromatographic device are used to identify the materials emitting the particles and gases; and, hence the source of the over-heating may be located without disassembly of the dynamoelectric machine.
