[Also in Group XXXIX] In an automatic temperature control system differentially biased saturable reactors in cascade are used to provide variable on-off control. As shown, on saturable reactor 30 the bias windings 35, 36 are arranged to oppose the reactance windings 32, 33, whereby in the absence of a control signal the reactor saturates late in the applied voltage cycle. On saturable reactor 20 the bias windings 26, 27 assist the reactance windings 18, 19 to produce early saturation A sharp current rise in the load 11 (heating element) is ensured by positive feedback through windings 28, 29 assisting saturation. Arrival of a control pulse from reactor 30 later in the cycle (through windings 24, 25) desaturates the reactor to cut off the current pulse through the load. As the heater warms up the control signal from the thermocouple through coil 34 opposes the bias on reactor 30 so that it saturates earlier in the applied voltage cycle and thus causes earlier desaturation of the reactor 20, i.e. reduces the time for which the current passes through the heater in each cycle.
