    Abstract: A self-contained control unit for a first vehicle body closure movable by a rotary input regulator and a second vehicle body closure manually movable and maintained in a closed position by a latch, the control unit including an escutcheon adapted for mounting on a vehicle body and rotatably supporting a regulator drive shaft and a release shaft, a drive member adapted to drive the regulator and rotatably supported on the drive shaft, a first sliding clutch on the drive shaft having a collar thereon, the first clutch being spring biased toward a coupling position coupling the drive shaft to the drive member, a second sliding clutch on the release shaft, the second clutch having an actuating arm adapted to release the closure latch when the second clutch is rotated and a collar engaging the collar on the first clutch, the second clutch being movable to a coupling position drivingly coupled to the release shaft for unitary rotation therewith while the two collars and the spring cooperate to synchronize movement of the two clutches, and a lock controlled cylinder cam rotatably supported on the escutcheon and operative to move the second clutch in and out of the coupling position thereof thereby to effect simultaneous isolation of both the latch and the regulator.

    Abstract: A closure is supported on a vehicle body for generally vertical bodily shiftable movement between open and closed positions relative to an opening in the vehicle body by a hinge arm supported on the vehicle body for pivotal movement about a first axis of the latter. The weight of the closure produces on the hinge arm about the first axis a gravitational turning moment which is counterbalanced by a hinge counterbalance according to this invention including a torsion rod with a crank thereon, an intermediate lever pivotally supported on the vehicle body, a connecting link between the torsion rod and the intermediate lever, cam means on the intermediate lever and follower means on the hinge arm. The torsion rod through the connecting link produces a primary turning moment on the intermediate lever while the cam means and follower means cooperate to produce a secondary turning moment on the hinge arm of magnitude varying in inverse proportion to the magnitude of the primary turning moment.

    Abstract: A dovetail arrangement for a closure panel movable in a generally vertical path between open and closed positions with respect to a vehicle body opening, the dovetail arrangement including, on the vehicle body, a retainer and a vertically sliding wedge member and further including, on the closure panel, an elongated striker having a shank with an enlarged tapered head on one end thereof. In the closed position of the closure panel the retainer engages the striker under the enlarged head and the wedge member engages the striker on the taper of the enlarged head thereby cooperating with the retainer to capture the striker and prevent substantially all bodily shiftable relative movement between the closure panel and the vehicle body longitudinally of the closure panel.

    Abstract: A predetermined operational sequence for a pair of closures supported on a vehicle body for independent movement relative to an opening in the vehicle body is maintained by movement sequencing means including a latchbolt engageable on a striker supported on a first of the two closures and operable in a latching position to maintain the first closure in the closed position, a detent lever movable between detenting and releasing positions and operable in the detenting position to maintain the latchbolt in the latching position, a bellcrank with stop means thereon which bellcrank is supported on the vehicle body for movement between an unblocking position and a blocking position in the path of motion of the second of the two closures to prevent movement of the second closure to the closed position, and a substantially inextensible connecting member connecting the detent lever to the bellcrank so that the bellcrank prevents movement of the detent lever from the detenting to the releasing, position when the second closure is in the closed position and the detent lever prevents movement of the bellcrank from the blocking to the unblocking position when the first closure is in the open position.
