    Abstract: A steering gear assembly particularly adapted for automobile applications and including a housing, a worm shaft disposed on the housing for rotation about a first axis of the latter, a rack nut member disposed on the worm shaft for bodily shiftable movement in response to rotation of the worm shaft and having a plurality of straight rack teeth, a sector member disposed on the housing for pivotal movement about a second axis of the latter and having a plurality of straight gear teeth the roots of which are parallel to the second axis, the gear teeth meshingly engaging the rack teeth, and an anti-lash insert disposed in a cavity in the rack nut member and having a plurality of tooth segments with profiles corresponding to the profile of the rack teeth. The insert is spring biased toward an offset position wherein the tooth segments are disposed at an angle with respect to the gear teeth so that the latter, upon engagement with the rack teeth, are resiliently captured in a no-lash condition between each tooth segment and corresponding ones of the rack teeth.

    Abstract: An energy absorbing support unit for an automobile bumper bar, the support unit including a pair of telescopically related tube members adapted for disposition between the bumper bar and the vehicle chassis, an orificed piston rigidly attached to one tube member and adapted to effect throttled flow of an incompressible medium situated in a chamber in the other tube member to effect energy absorption, a free piston slidably mounted in the one tube member and resiliently biased toward a normal position corresponding to a fully extended position of the one tube member, the free piston urging reverse flow of the incompressible medium to provide a self-restoring preload on the one tube member, and a reciprocating valve member on the free piston movable between an open position and a closed position partially obstructing the piston orifices to increase the rate of energy absorption. The free piston, in the normal position thereof, engages the valve member to positively locate the latter in the open position whenever the one tube member is in its fully extended position.

    Abstract: A double Cardan universal joint has a centering means in which the ball seat is biased into engagement with the centering ball with a constant spring force. Specifically, a movable ball seat is biased by a spring which reacts against a member which slides on the longitudinal axis of the yoke carrying the ball seat and which pivots on the yoke carrying the fixed centering ball about the centering ball center. An improved sealing arrangement is also disclosed. Specifically, a synthetic rubber lip seal seals against the major diameter portion of an outer spherical surface on a sleeve carrying the ball seat. Such an arrangement removes the synthetic rubber lip seal from the heat generated by the centering ball and ball seat and minimizes the flexure of the lip seal during joint operation.
