Fluorescent lamps that utilize mercury, and methods and materials to reduce the solubility of mercury when fluorescent lamps are disposed of in a landfill. Such a fluorescent lamp includes a transparent envelope and at least one base enclosing an interior chamber within the envelope. The base has an interior surface and a sealing portion sealed to the envelope with a cement. A gas mixture comprising mercury vapor is contained within the interior chamber, and a quantity of material is disposed on the interior surface of the base. The quantity of material is spaced apart from the sealing portion and the cement thereof, and comprises a chemical agent that substantially reduces or prevents formation of leachable mercury.

Phosphor-containing coating compositions and methods capable of changing the lumen maintenance characteristics of phosphor-containing coatings and fluorescent lamps that utilize such coatings. Lumen maintenance of a fluorescent lamp can be modified by forming a phosphor-containing coating to contain at least a first phosphor that depreciates during operation of the fluorescent lamp, and forming the phosphor-containing coating to further contain an additive composition in a sufficient amount and sufficiently uniformly distributed in the phosphor-containing coating to inhibit depreciation of the first phosphor during operation of the fluorescent lamp.
Abstract:
Improved recyclability of phosphors in fluorescent lamps is provided. A fluorescent lamp is constructed with phosphor particles having a specific surface area less than a certain predetermined value. During recycling, these phosphor particles are more readily separated from the basing cement used in such fluorescent lamp. A method is also provided by which such phosphors are more readily separated from the basing cement.
