Abstract: 877,773. Gear-grinding. GLEASON WORKS. April 17, 1959 [April 18, 1958], No. 13228/59. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIII] A machine for grinding straight or skew bevels &c, comprises two spindles 27, 39 on a head 13 mounted on a rotatable cradle 11, the spindles being inclined to the face of the cradle. The machine, with twin grinding heads, is generally similar to that described in Specification 778,479. Each head is carried on a slide 22 adjustable in a direction 24 on a plate 23 which is adjustable in a direction 26 on an angularly adjustable plate 25. The spindle 27 is driven by a motor 31 on the head and the wheel may be trimmed by a dresser 32. As the wheel is dressed, the edge 35 between the operative faces 16, 33 recedes along a line 36 parallel to the cradle axis. The larger wheels 14 interfere with one another if adjusted to grind small-diameter gears. Smaller wheels 41 are therefore fitted on the auxiliary spindle 39. The same dresser is used but with a modified tool carrying arm 43. When the larger wheels are used, a casing 45 containing the spindle 39 and a cover 53, enclosing a toothed driving belt 48, are removed. A protective cap 52 is fitted on each spindle 27 when the smaller wheels are used.
