Abstract: A method to achieve variable properties of a component using a coating free press hardened steel comprises: transferring a blank of a coating free press hardened steel (CFPHS) material having base blank properties into a heating unit having multiple induction heating coils; heating the blank within the heating unit to create a modified blank having differing modified blank properties throughout the modified blank compared to base blank properties; moving the modified blank out of the heating unit into a die; and forming a shaped part by operation of the die creating a finished CFPHS part.

Abstract: A plunger for die casting may include a front injector end made of an iron alloy including, by mass: about 1% to about 6% nickel, about 0.1% to about 5% copper, about 0.2% to about 2.5% aluminum, about 0.5% to about 2% manganese, and about 0.05% to about 0.2% carbon. The iron alloy may be formed into an initial shape of the front injector end, heated to a temperature greater than or equal to about 900° C. and then cooled to form a supersaturated solid solution of iron and dissolved alloying elements. Then, the iron alloy may be heated at a temperature sufficient to precipitate intermetallic nanoparticles from the supersaturated solid solution to form an intermetallic precipitate phase dispersed throughout an iron-based matrix phase. A chemical compound layer may be formed at and along a surface of the iron alloy by exposing the iron alloy to an oxygen-containing and/or nitrogen-containing environment.

Abstract: A method of forming a component having a cross-section with a bend radius includes providing a work-piece blank from press-hardened steel (PHS). The method also includes austenitizing the work-piece blank in a furnace via heating the strip of sheet metal to achieve therein an austenite microstructure, including soaking the work-piece blank for a predetermined amount of time. The method additionally includes quenching the austenitized work-piece blank to achieve therein a martensitic matrix microstructure with dispersed chromium-enriched carbide. The method also includes roll-forming the austenitized and quenched work-piece blank to generate the cross-section and the bend radius. The method may further include locally heating the bend radius area during the roll-forming of the cross-section to reduce an amount of chromium-enriched carbide in the martensitic matrix microstructure inside the bend radius area relative to the microstructure outside the bend, and thereby generating the component having high strength, ductility, and wear resistance.
