Abstract: An apex seal for a rotary piston engine, the apex seal being made of cast iron and having an elongated shape, a roundish sliding surface, said apex seal comprising a hardened portion including the sliding surface with a chilled structure containing a large proportion of cementite and a non-hardened portion with at least one-third of the height of the seal and with no chilled structure; and a method of producing the same.
