Electrical power for an electrically heated vehicle windshield is controlled by an arrangement utilizing a modified alternator coupled to the windshield heater via an autotransformer. In a high power mode, the vehicle battery is coupled to a center tap of the alternator, while in a normal power mode the vehicle battery is coupled to a conventional rectified output of the alternator. A microprocessor controlled silicon controlled rectifier bridge provides direct current to the windshield heater element by rectifying the output of the autotransformer. Additionally, a current sensor coupled to the heater element is utilized by the microprocessor to determine the electrical resistance of the heater element in order to take required diagnostic measures.

An electrical system for an automotive vehicle has a plurality of electrical generating machines having field windings energized by pulse width modulated drive signals generated by an external electronic voltage regulator. The pulse width modulated drive signals have a duty cycle determined by the electronic voltage regulator. A controller selects one of electrical generating machines to evaluate for failure and evaluates that electrical generating machine for failure by causing the PWM drive signal for the field windings of that electrical generating machine to be disabled. The controller then determines that this electrical generating machine has failed if the duty cycle for the PWM drive signals has then not been increased by the electronic voltage regulator by a pre-determined amount. The electrical generating machines are either generators or alternators. In an aspect, the PWM drive signals for the plurality of electrical generating machines are out of phase with each other.

An ionization current sensing circuit providing a way to detect the combustion event in a spark ignited engine cylinder. The presence of an output signal from the proposed circuit indicates that a flame exists and that combustion has occurred in the cylinder. This signal is drastically changed if combustion is absent, the circuit providing viable engine misfire detection. The ionization current sensing circuit comprising a power source for providing voltage directly to the primary winding of the ignition coil, an integrator for integrating a spark plug ionization current and thereby providing a voltage output in proportion to the integral of the ionization current, and an ionization current sensing module for sensing a spark plug ionization current, the ionization means connected between the secondary winding of the ignition coil and the integrator means.

A fault detection system detects the existence of unwanted electrical paths between the high voltage traction system of an electric car and the chassis of the car. The fault detection system includes a positive sampling RC circuit connected to the positive conductor of the traction system and a negative sampling RC circuit connected to the negative conductor of the traction system. Each RC circuit generates a voltage, and the voltages are balanced, i.e., the voltages are equal and opposite, when no leakage path exists. In contrast, when a leakage path to chassis exists, the voltages are not balanced. A comparator compares the sum of the voltages to a setpoint which varies proportionately to the varying voltage of the battery of the traction system, and a fault condition is indicated when the sum of the voltages exceeds the setpoint.

A misfire detection apparatus and method is provided for detecting misfire in cylinders of an internal combustion engine in a motor vehicle. The method includes sensing ionization current through spark plugs in either a distributorless ignition system or a distributor ignition system. The method also includes disabling ionization current sensing during ignition coil discharge time. The method further includes making and storing the combustion ionization measurements in order to determine if a misfire has occurred and if catalyst damage has occurred due to the misfire.
