A rocker arm of the cam follower type has a rocker arm body formed of a metal matrix composite material comprising a lightweight metal, preferably aluminum, having ceramic material mixed therein. The rocker arm may take the form of a "slider" arm which included a pad for slideably engaging a cam on a rotating cam shaft for pivotally moving the rocker arm to operate an associated valve. For a slider rocker arm, the cam engaging pad comprises a wear resistant ceramic material which may be integrally formed into the rocker arm or otherwise secured thereto after forming. Alternately, the rocker arm may take the form of a "roller" rocker arm wherein a roller formed of a first ceramic material is rotatably mounted on an axle formed of a second ceramic material and mounted between sidewalls of the rocker arm body. One or both ceramic materials may be porous and self-lubricating when impregnated with a solid or liquid lubricant. A variety of hardening techniques, coatings and inserts may be provided as required.

A method to attach a V-shaped or parabolic-shaped blast shield or other blast shields, to the bottom of a vehicle space frame that serves the purpose of redirecting the blast forces away from the crew compartment of the vehicle. Inner beams that run the length or width of the blast shield, align with the space frame running in the same direction. The beams are attached with bolts going through the top of each beam and into a threaded boss welded in the space frame. To attach the sides of the blast shield to the space frame, a rail adapter bracket mounts to the bottom of the space frame that has threaded bosses welded into the space frame. Slotted holes for forward and back and side-to-side adjustment on an adapter bracket are employed to help attach the blast shield to the space frame.

A method of attaching a metal shaft (10) to a ceramic shaft (12) having a first diameter (d.sub.1) is characterized by the following steps. A shaft portion (16) is formed on the ceramic shaft with a second diameter (d.sub.2) less than the first diameter. The shaft portion extends from a free end (18) thereof along a portion of the length of the ceramic shaft to a terminal end (20) thereof where the ceramic shaft has a raised portion (22) formed thereon having a third diameter (d.sub.3) less than the first diameter but greater than the second diameter. The free end of the shaft portion has threads (24) thereon. A circular shaped expansion sleeve (26) is placed on the shaft portion in an encircling relationship therewith, the expansion sleeve extending from the raised portion of the metal shaft to a location (28) adjacent a termination of the threads on the shaft portion. All of the members are cooled and then assembled with the metal shaft. The metal shaft is formed so as to have both a hollow interior portion (30) having a diameter slightly greater than the third diameter of the raised portion of the ceramic shaft and an internally threaded hollow portion (32). The assembly is carried out so that the threads of the ceramic shaft are mated with the threads of the metal shaft. The expansion sleeve is trapped in a volume defined by the shaft portion of the ceramic shaft, the hollow interior portion of the metal shaft, the raised portion of the ceramic shaft, and a closed end (34) of the hollow interior portion of the metal shaft.

The adjustable louvered armor window system invention comprises angled louvers made of the lightweight opaque armor. For the front window a viewing window of ballistic glass can be installed, the rear or sides could be solid armor. The louvers have overlaps to provide for gap protection. When no threat is present, the louvers are in the full open position. Once a threat is detected, then the louvers are closed. The movement of the louvers can be accomplished by a push/pull cable, hydraulic pressure, air pressure or other means. The system in the fully open position allows for a complete unobstructed viewing area. In the semi-deployed or partial down position, the system provides partial ballistic coverage for the occupant, and still allows for some occupant vision capability. In the fully deployed, or fully closed position, the system provides full ballistic coverage for the occupant, with a small viewing area or port, which is made of ballistic grade transparent armor.

Another method includes introducing a slurry into a mold unit comprised of a mold contained within a casting receptacle, placing insulation material around at least a portion of the casting receptacle to minimize distortion in the freeze-cast substrate by controlling temperature gradients within the mold unit, and lowering the temperature of the slurry to freeze the slurry to form a freeze-cast substrate.

To induce fracture under test conditions for a tool bit configuration held in a laterally restrained condition, but with freedom to move up and down, a series of members (hardened steel ball bearings) are selected as to size, butted together, and constrained so that such members make tangential point contact with a constrained bit at locations close to the corners of one end surface supported on the members. When a centralized load is imposed on the opposite end surface of the bit, stress forces can be set up on the bit to result in a body bend fracture or an edge chip fracture, depending on how close the point contacts are to a curved sector. Each point contact is located along a radius bisecting a corner sector, the location being spaced from the sector a distance either (a) of at least one-half the sector radius, but within 0.01875-0.0312 inch, to induce edge chip fracture, or (b) of at least the sector radius, but no less than 0.0625 inch, to induce bend strength fracture.

An armor blast shield for use on the bottom of a vehicle to protect occupants of the vehicle from improvised explosive devices. A preferred embodiment is configured in a V-shaped configuration formed by at least two planar blast resistant panels and an I-beam having channels with inclined walls which receive the panels at an obtuse angle. The panels are adhesively adhered to the I-beam channel walls and at least one bolt is secured through the I-beam and a panel to provide superior blast resistant performance as compared to welded panels.
