An apparatus and method for reducing the level of power consumption in an electronic device when the electronic device is operating in a standby mode or low-power mode. The level of power consumption is reduced by alternately shutting off standby power and turning on standby power to the electronic device. A standby cycle timer circuit is provided for automatically controlling the supply of standby power to the electronic device during standby mode. The standby cycle timer circuit becomes inactive when the electronic device resumes normal operation.

The adaptive compensation circuit utilizes an identification of a lamp type of the lamp to thereby generate a signal indicative of a time constant of the lamp. The adaptive compensation circuit subsequently determines a zero position and a pair of pole positions corresponding to the time constant, and generates a control voltage in response to a determination of the zero position and the pair of pole positions. The control voltage facilitates an operation of the universal lamp driver to stably provide a lamp current to the lamp.

An electronic ballast for an electron discharge lamp includes a resonant inverter driven by a high frequency switching signal supplied by a drive circuit which is substantially comprised in an integrated circuit, the lamp being connected in an output circuit of the inverter and powered thereby. The lamp intensity is controlled by changing the switching signal frequency, thereby changing the power supplied to the lamp. In order to prevent parasitic capacitance of remote wiring between the ballast and the lamp from causing inaccuracies in determination of the power being supplied to the lamp, the ballast takes into account the phase difference between lamp current and voltage in making such determination. For example, by deriving the product of rectified lamp voltage and rectified lamp current, and using the arithmetic summation of such products during each operating cycle as a measure of lamp power.

A gas discharge lamp has an impedance element such as a capacitor connected to at least one electrode heater, to produce a heater impedance which falls within a range which is unique to lamps of that lamp type. An electronic ballast for operating such lamp has a lamp type detection circuit which measures the cold heater impedance and identifies the corresponding lamp type. The ballast may sample the heater circuit current to determine resistive and reactive components to aid in lamp type identification and to control heater warm-up. The ballast may include a separate inverter for heater power, and control heater power separate from arc power after lamp ignition.

A memory system comprised of M integrated circuits (IC's) in which M-1 of the IC's store data bits and the Mth IC stores system parity bits. Each IC includes a memory array of cells organized into W internal words of several bits, a parity array for storing a parity bit for each internal word, means for reading-out a selected bit, means for reading the internal word containing the selected bit and ascertaining whether its parity is correct and for producing a first signal indicative thereof. Each IC also includes means responsive to its selected data bit and to an externally generated signal indicative of the parity of the data bit read-out from one or more of the other IC's for producing a signal indicative of the parity of the combined signal. The M IC's may be interconnected to produce a system parity signal at the output of the Mth IC indicative of whether the parity of the M data bits read-out from the M IC's is correct. Each IC also includes means responsive to the system parity signal and to its internally generated first signal indicating the presence of parity errors "correcting" the selected bit outputted from the IC.
