For attaching exothermic plates to a mold wall a tool for driving fastening elements by means of an explosive charge is secured to the lower end of an elongated upright support member and a support arm extends laterally outwardly from the support member across the top of the wall to which the plates are to be attached and the support arm has a serrated edge part which is arranged to engage the upper outer edge of the mold wall for holding the tool in place during the driving operation.

In a device for fastening identification members, such as plates, to a hard receiving material by means of bolts, a bolt setting gun is mounted on a support frame for movement between a firing position where its muzzle is spaced from the receiving material and a fired position where the muzzle is located adjacent the receiving material. Supported from the gun is a storage element in which a plurality of identification members are held ready to be moved, one at a time, from an open end of the storage element to a location in front of the muzzle in the firing position. An angle lever pivotally attached to the storage element and moves the identification members from the storage element into position in front of the muzzle. The angle lever is spring biased into position for withdrawing an identification member from the storage element. The gun has a noze adjacent its muzzle and as the muzzle returns from the fired position to the firing position, the nose contacts the angle lever and pivots it, against the spring biasing action, so that an identification member is moved in front of the muzzle. When the gun is fired, the nose moves toward the receiving material and releases the angle lever. In its released condition, the angle lever, due to the spring biasing action, moves into position to pick up another identification member. Accordingly, during each firing cycle, as one identification member is fastened to the hard receiving material, another identification member is automatically moved in position in front of the muzzle of the gun.

A nail holder for feeding nails serially into a setting device from which they are driven by an explosive force into a target material is formed by an elongated belt or strip which has a plurality of longitudinally spaced holes each of which holds the shank of a nail. Between each pair of holes a transversely extending slot is arranged which extends across a major portion of the strip between its longitudinal edges. When a nail is driven from the setting device, its head contacts the strip and the section between the slots separates from the remainder of the strip forming a disc or washer on the shank of the nail. The disc or washer has an area which is a multiple of the area of the nail head and its extended surface is useful in securing low strength materials to the target material.

In a device for driving fastening elements, such as nails and the like, into a target material, the device has an axially extending bore through which the fastening elements are driven with explosive force by means of a piston and a channel perpendicularly intersects the forward end of the bore for guiding a holder strip supporting the fastening elements through the bore so that the fastening elements can be axially aligned into position to be driven by the piston. The forward or muzzle end of the bore has a larger diameter than its rearward end. The rearward end of the bore serves as a guide for the piston while the forward end guides the fastening elements to be driven from the device. The length of the channel in the axial direction of the bore is sufficient to receive and guide the entire length of the fastening element into the bore. Further, the channel has two pair of guide grooves, one for the holder strip and the other for the head of the fastening element.

In a nail holder assembly for use in an explosive charge driven setting device, nails with heads extending transversely outwardly from the shank portion of the nail, are held in spaced relationship on and extending through an elongated belt-like strip. The strip is arranged to form a washer-like member around each nail as it is driven from the strip into a target material, the washer has an area which is a multiple of the area of the head of the nail. A sleeve is positioned about the shank portion of each nail between its head and the surface of the strip so that the sleeve is forced against the strip when the nail is driven into the target material. The sleeve can be cylindrically or frusto-conically shaped and the holes in the strip through which the nails pass, can be provided with a counterbore having a configuration corresponding at least to the configuration of the end of the sleeve directed toward the strip.
