Abstract: A process for preparing hardenable aminoplasts comprises (1) reacting basic bistriazinones of the formula wherein n is 1 or 2; R1, R2, R3 and R4 each are a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R1 is an alkylene radical of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, with aliphatic compounds having a chain of at least 8 carbon atoms and one group capable of reacting with amino groups, (2) if desired, quaternizing the product totally or partially, (3) reacting on mol. of the product with 2.0 to 6.0 mols. of an aliphatic aldehyde and (4) if desired, alkylating the alkylol groups with an alcohol. Reaction (1) may be carried out in the presence of a base such as an hydrazide, carbonate, bicarbonate or alcoholate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal. The quaternizing agent may be a halogen alkyl, a dialkyl sulphate or a halo-carboxylic acid. The hardenable aminoplasts may be alkylated by alcohols having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in strongly acid medium. The bistriazinones may be those obtained by reacting dimethylolurea, or urea and formaldehyde, with an alkylenepolyamine. The long chain compound may have a reactive group which is a carboxylic acid halide, azide or ester group or a carbamic acid chloride, chlorocarbonic acid ester, chloromethyl ether, isocyanate, N-methylolamide or N-methylolurethane group. Specified are octadecylisocyanate, lauric acid chloride, stearic acid chloride, hexadecyl azide and octadecyl chloromethyl ether. Aldehydes specified are formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, acetaldehyde and glyoxal. Aqueous and/or alcoholic compositions of the products of the invention comprising optional additives selected from acid hardening agents such as magnesium chloride, zinc nitrate, ammonium chloride and diglycolic acid; dimethylolethyleneurea and its ethers; polymethylolmelamine and its ethers; and polyoxyethylated tri-isobutylphenol may be used as textile finishing agents.ALSO:A process for preparing condensation products comprises (1) reacting basic bistriazinones of the formula: wherein n is 1 or 2; R1, R2, R3 and R4 each are a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and R1 is an alkylene radical of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, with aliphatic compounds having a chain of at least 8 carbon atoms and one group capable of reacting with amino groups, (2) if desired, quaternizing the product totally or partially, (3) reacting one mol of the product with 2.0 to 6.0 mols of an aliphatic aldehyde and (4) if desired, alkylating the alkylol groups with an alcohol.
