Abstract: An example apparatus, method, and computer program product for detecting thermal runaway in a battery pack are provided. The example apparatus may include a membrane, a light source, and a light sensing diode, disposed within a vent housing. In some embodiments, the membrane may be positioned between a battery compartment, including a battery cell, and an external environment. In some embodiments, the light source and the light sensing diode may be on opposite sides of the membrane. In an instance in which a pressure within the battery compartment exceeds a maximum internal pressure such that the membrane is ruptured, the light sensing diode may receive light from the light source. In some embodiments, receiving light from the light source at the light sensing diode may be an indication of an onset of thermal runaway.

Abstract: Example apparatuses, methods, and systems for detecting battery module leakage are provided. An example battery module leakage detection device includes a pressure and temperature sensor and a controller. In some examples, the pressure and temperature sensor is positioned within a battery module casing of a battery module. In some examples, the controller is in electronic communication with the pressure and temperature sensor and configured to receive a plurality of detected pressure signals and a plurality of detected temperature signals, calculate a detected pressure-to-temperature value, calculate a pressure-to-temperature difference value, and, in response to determining that the pressure-to-temperature difference value is outside a tolerance threshold, generate a leakage warning signal associated with the battery module.

Abstract: A sensing device is provided. For example, a sensing device may include a conducting element, a DC voltage source, a voltage measuring device, a first switching circuitry to selectively connect the DC voltage source to the conducting element, and a processor that controls the first switching circuitry. The conducting element comprises first and second dissimilar materials arranged such that there is a first junction between the dissimilar materials and a second junction between the dissimilar materials. The processor controls the first switching circuitry to connect the DC voltage source to the conducting element to apply a DC voltage for a first period of time and to disconnect the DC voltage source to measure a voltage over a second period of time.

Abstract: A system, device, and method for monitoring the health condition of load-bearing battery cells are provided. An example system may include a battery pack containing load-bearing battery cells electrically connected to a load. The system may further include a reference device housing a reference battery cell, a battery charger/discharger, and a sensing device. The reference battery cell may be subjected to a greater number of charge/discharge cycles than the load-bearing battery cells. The system may further include a battery management device, wherein the battery management device monitors the load current on the load-bearing battery cells, and transmits a reference current corresponding to the load current to the reference device, such that the reference current is applied to the reference battery cell. The health condition of the load-bearing battery cells may then be determined based on the condition of the reference battery cell.
