摘要: A light modulating device comprises a plurality of data electrodes, a plurality of strobe electrodes, pixels at the intersections of the strobe and data electrodes, and addressing means for supplying data signals to the data electrodes in successive data selection periods and for supplying strobe signals to the strobe electrodes to set the transmission levels of the pixels in dependence on the data signals supplied to the pixels during each data selection period. Each pixel comprises a pair of subelements, and the addressing means is arranged to address the subelements of the pair by 1:3 spatial dither and to supply different strobe signals to each of the subelements during different bits of 1:1 spatial or temporal dither within the same data selection period. The transmission level of each subelement is determined by the data signal applied to the subelement in the data selection period in association with the strobe signal applied to the corresponding spatial or temporal dither bit.

摘要: Given a natural number “n”, then, in the first frame of continuous two frames, strobe pulses of opposite polarities are applied respectively to a scanning electrode L2n−1 in a (2n−1)'th line and a scanning electrode L2n in a 2n'th line during a selection period. In the second frame, strobe pulses of opposite polarities are applied respectively to the scanning electrode L2n in the 2n'th line and a scanning electrode L2n+1 in a (2n+1)'th line during a selection period.

摘要: A ferroelectric liquid crystal display includes data electrodes connected to a data signal generator and strobe electrodes connected to a strobe signal generator. The strobe signal generator supplies strobe signals in sequence to the strobe electrodes within a plurality of consecutive time slots and the data signal generator supplies data signals simultaneously and in synchronism with the strobe signals so as to refresh sequentially the rows of pixels formed at the intersections of the data electrodes and the strobe electrodes, each pixel having at least two switching thresholds. Each of the strobe signals comprises a strobe pulse within a corresponding one of the time slots, the strobe pulse being preceded by a pre-pulse which reduces the effects of pixel patterning caused by refreshing the previously refreshed row of pixels. The pre-pulse extends within a time slot preceding the corresponding one of the plurality of consecutive time slots. The duration of the pre-pulse is greater than the duration of one of the plurality of consecutive time slots.

摘要: A display such as a ferroelectric liquid crystal display includes a matrix of pixels, for instance formed at the intersections of data electrodes and strobe electrodes. In order to address an intermediate grey level, each pixel is switched from the normally black mode to the grey level in odd frames and from the normally white mode to the grey level in even frames. Variations in the grey levels, for instance caused by temperature variations, act in opposite directions so that the average grey level over time of the pixel varies relatively little.

摘要: A liquid crystal display which includes a matrix of pixels, for instance formed at the intersections of data electrodes and split strobe electrodes. Each pixel is divided into first and second sub-pixels. The first sub-pixels have input and output polarisers whose polarization directions are parallel, whereas the second sub-pixels have input and output polarisers whose polarization directions are orthogonal. In order to address and achieve grey levels with reduced variations due to temperature variations and liquid crystal variations, the sub-pixels are switched to a grey level in accordance with a spatial averaging technique. Variations in the grey levels of the sub-pixels, for instance caused by temperature variations, act in opposite directions so that the average grey level of the whole pixel varies relatively little.

摘要: A ferroelectric liquid crystal display comprises data electrodes and strobe electrodes which are connected to data and signal generators. The strobe signal generator supplies strobe signals sequentially to groups of more than one strobe electrode. For instance, the strobe electrodes may be strobed in pairs with the strobe signals being supplied simultaneously to the electrodes of each pair. The data signal generator supplies any of a plurality of different data signals to each of the data electrodes in synchronism with the strobe signals. The data signals are such that all combinations of optical states for the pixels which are connected to the same data electrode and which are strobed simultaneously can be achieved.

摘要: A liquid crystal array device comprises a liquid crystal material contained between two substrates, a first and a second plurality of electrodes defining a plurality of pixels and driving circuitry for applying a first signal (Strobe Voltage) in succession to the first plurality of electrodes and for applying a plurality of second signals (Data Voltage) to each of the second plurality of electrodes. Each second signal comprises one of at least a first waveform and a second waveform and the first waveform and the second waveform each comprise first and second signal levels. The first waveform and the second waveform further comprise at least one portion at a third signal level different from the first and second signal levels. This provides a limited difference in heating effect upon the array between a signal comprising a plurality of first waveforms and an alternating succession of first and second waveforms.
