A viscous shear coupling, comprising a first part in the form of a housing (2), a second part (3) disposed within the housing to define an annular closure therebetween, a first set of annular plates (11) in the enclosure secured for rotation with the first coupling part interleaved with the plates (12) of a second set of plates, secured for rotation with the second coupling part (3) and a viscous liquid at least partially filling the enclosure, wherein the plates are provided with through slots (13, 14) which are arranged so that parts of the slots move into and out of area of axial alignment as the sets of plates rotate relative to one another. The slots in one set of plates are inclined to the radii of the plates, while the slots in the other set of plates may be radial such that in one direction of rotation of the first set of plates relative to the second set of plates the axially aligned areas of the slots of two adjacent plates move inwardly towards said axis, and in the opposite direction of rotation of the first set of plates relative to the second of plates the axially aligned areas of the slots of two adjacent plates move outwardly away from said axis. The coupling is able to transmit differing torques according to the direction of relative rotation between the plates, so that it is useful for an inter-axle drive line in a four-wheel drive motor vehicle.

A screw extruder having a cylinder, an extrusion head, a screw in the cylinder and a motor for driving the screw in rotation has insert members which extend into the cylinder to effect plastification and homogenization of the material being extruded. The web of the screw is provided with annular recesses into which the insert members project. Some of the insert members are stationary, in the form of pins projecting radially into the cylinder, while others are movable so as to vary the extent of their projection into the cylinder. The movable insert members may be pins extending radially into the cylinder and movable radially, rotatable threaded pins extending tangentially into the cylinder, rotatable pins extending tangentially into the cylinder and having non-circular portions in the cylinder, or sector-shaped discs which are movable pivotally. Actuators for the movable insert members are controlled by a processor which compares measured output temperature of the extrudant in the extruder head with a preselected temperature.

A seal on a drive shaft of an extrusion machine having a housing, is provided by a sealing chamber through which the shaft, for example the drive shaft of the shear spindle, extends in entering the housing, and a sealing screw thread on a portion of the shaft in the sealing chamber, the sealing screw thread having a screw direction for propelling material toward the interior of the housing. Sealing material in the form of granular plastic material is fed to the sealing chamber at a controlled rate by a device having a storage container for the granular plastic material, the bottom of the container having a funnel feeding the granular plastic material into an elongate cavity which communicates with the sealing chamber and in which the piston rod of a piston-cylinder unit is reciprocable to propel the granular plastic material into the sealing chamber. The pressure inside the sealing chamber is sensed and the operation of the piston-cylinder unit is controlled to maintain the pressure approximately constant. Fluid is circulated in a channel in the wall of the sealing chamber to keep the temperature of the chamber below the melting temperature of the granular plastic material.

The invention relates to a process and apparatus for processing elastomeric material in particular plastic, rubber and a mixture thereof in roller-head-apparatus in which the material to be processed is plasticized and homogenized in an extruder, extruded from an extrusion head provided on the extruder and then is led through an aperture formed between two rollers. It is the object of the present invention, with an especially simple extrusion head in a roller-head-apparatus to produce uniform and dimensionally exact sheets or foils of different thicknesses without changing structural parts. The invention achieves this in that material formed in plate form by parallel outlet surfaces of the extruder head is led through an aperture space formed between a concave cylindrical surface of a stationary forming tool and the circumferential surface of one of the rollers of the calender before the material enters the space between the two calender rollers.
