With the present invention, an optical pickup device generates a main beam and sub beams that are made up from pairs of semi sub beams, such that the distance in the radial direction between center positions of a pair of semi sub spots on an optical disc where a pair of semi sub beams are formed is an odd multiple of half the track pitch of the optical disc, and the distance in the radial direction between center positions of semi sub spots that correspond to another pair of sub semi sub beams is an odd multiple of half the track pitch of another optical disc.

The pickup has a photodetector including a pair of detector elements disposed side by side. An astigmatizer is disposed on an axis of a light beam reflected from an optical disc for producing an astigmatic beam. The photodetector is positioned outside a point where a spot of the astigmatic beam becomes a circular shape, and a boundary line between the two detector elements is disposed on a line along which the spot moves in a tracking operation.

    摘要: An optical pickup apparatus has a simplified configuration for using a plurality of laser beams at different wavelength to reduce the size, and a laser diode chip for use therewith. An irradiation light path for leading a laser beam emitted from a light emitter to a recording medium is provided with an optical axis correcting element for passing a first laser beam and for diffracting a second laser beam having a wavelength different from that of the first laser beam to generate diffracted light which has the optical axis substantially matching the optical axis of the first laser beam. The optical axis correcting element is arranged at a position at which the center of a light intensity distribution of the first laser beam incident thereto matches the center of a light intensity distribution of the second laser beam incident thereto.
