An open loop power control system for an orthogonal frequency division modulation (OFDM)-based fixed/mobile wireless system. A preferred system and method comprise measuring signal strength of received interference-free pilot tones transmitted by a base station; determining pathloss according to received power level of pilot tones; and controlling transmit power level of the remote unit by adjusting transmitting channel attenuation according to the pathloss determined in the preceding step. The method may further comprise monitoring at the base station the received signal level of uplink pilot tones; checking if received signal level of uplink pilot tones is outside pre-set limits around the target level at the start of each call; and sending a command to the mobile station over the broadcast channel to increase or decrease the transmitting power level.

A method and apparatus provide efficient synchronization recovery at the receiver end for a digital transmission system. At the receiving end, a digital signal is received including a transmitted data portion and a guard period. A signal envelope for the received digital signal is determined, and the signal envelope is filtered to find the center of the guard period, which provides a time reference for the received digital signal. Embodiments of the present invention described herein may be used for optimal operation of a digital transmission system by efficiently recovering synchronization from a received digital signal during noisy conditions without being dependent on signal shape or requiring complicated threshold calculations.

The invention provides an improved method for extracting heavy oil or bitumen contained in a reservoir. The invention involves directing the formation of a solvent fluid chamber through the combination of directed solvent fluid injection and production at combinations of horizontal and/or vertical injection wells so as to increase the recovery of heavy oil or bitumen contained in a reservoir. The wells are preferably provided with flow control devices to achieve uniform production.

Preferably, the composition comprises from about 5 parts by weight to about 95 parts by weight of an aromatic polyetherimide and from about 95 parts by weight to about 5 parts by weight of an aromatic polybenzimidazole. In a composition mostly comprised of an aromatic polybenzimidazole, it is preferred that the aromatic polyetherimide be present in the composition in an amount sufficient to make the aromatic polybenzimidazole more thermally processable and also less susceptible to moisture. More preferably, such compositions are comprised of from about 65 parts by weight to about 95 parts by weight of an aromatic polybenzimidazole and from about 35 parts by weight to about 5 parts by weight of an aromatic polyetherimide. In a composition mostly comprised of an aromatic polyetherimide, it is preferred that the aromatic polybenzimidazole be present in an amount sufficient to render the aromatic polyetherimide less sensitive to solvents, and to increase the glass transition temperature of the polyetherimide. More preferably, such compositions are comprised of from about 65 parts by weight to about 95 parts by weight of an aromatic polyetherimide and from about 35 parts by weight to about 5 parts by weight of an aromatic polybenzimidazole.
