    Abstract: A wide magnetic tape is self-threaded about a helical path containing a rotating head by pushing a tape along the channelized helical path. Electronic control of the supply motor, take-up motor, channel pneumatics and tape edge guides optimizes the threading of the helical path for speed and reliability. The supply spool acts as the pushing force on the tape to push the tape through the channelized path. Motion of the tape, including speed and position, is controlled as a result of sensing the position of the end of tape as it proceeds through the thread path and attaches itself to the take-up hub. The take-up hub is a vacuum hub to assist the attachment of the tape to the hub. Motion control of the tape during thread includes selection of speeds for different portions of thread operation including stopping and reversing tape motion to assist attachment of tape to the take-up hub and straightening of tape along the helical path.

    Abstract: An article in a carrier, such as magnetic media, is pneumatically dispatched through an incoming pneumatic tube to an automatic carrier terminal. The carrier is automatically unloaded with the article being processed. Upon completion of the processing, the carrier terminal supplies the carrier with the article therein through an outgoing tube to be picked up by a carrier exchanging system. The carrier is tracked throughout the dispatch system. A status byte is generated and memorized which indicates location of every carrier in a system. This tracking system is applicable not only to pneumatic dispatch systems but to other article carrying systems as well. A plurality of dispatch systems operate with one carrier exchanging system. A common control circuit controls article processing, the carrier exchanging system, the automatic carrier terminals and pneumatic dispatching.

    Abstract: A rotating head mandrel is contoured so that in cross-section the mandrel appears similar to the shape of an eyeball. Two mandrels are axially aligned for supporting a tape helically wrapped about the mandrels. Between the two mandrels is a rotor carrying a magnetic head. The magnetic tape helically wraps the two mandrels in the region of the rotor. The path of the rotating head relative to the tape is a transverse track at an acute angle to the longitudinal direction of the tape. The peak of the eyeball contour or cam shape contour of the mandrel is located at the entry and exit points of the tape as it helically wraps the mandrels. The peak gives the tape additional height relative to the rotating head and prevents the head from nicking the edge of the tape as it crosses the edges of the helically wrapped tape. The surfaces of the mandrels have holes through which air may be forced to provide a hydrostatic air bearing between the tape and the mandrels. The pattern of the holes on the mandrels is selected to support the tape in a uniform manner during helical wrap of the tape about the mandrels.
