Abstract: A display device includes light-emitting diode (LED) devices to implement an array of pixels, where pixels in the array are each associated with a respective first set of LED devices to implement a first set of sub-pixels and a respective second set of LED devices to implement a redundant second set of sub-pixels for the corresponding pixel. Controller circuitry is provided to alternatively enable the first set of LED devices or the second set of LED device to implement the sub-pixels of the corresponding pixel.

Abstract: Microphones are located between pixel display elements (e.g., micro-LEDs and OLEDs) in a display. Display-integrated microphones allow displays to have thinner bezels. Audio processing components can also be incorporated into the display and allow audio processing offloading from processors external to the display. Arrays of microphones allow for the beamforming of received audio signals to enhance the detection of sound from remote audio sources. Piezoelectric elements can also be integrated into a display to allow for localized haptic feedback. Integrated piezoelectric elements can act as speakers and beamforming techniques can be used to activate sets of piezoelectric elements in coordination to direct sound to a specific location external to the display. Piezoelectric elements can aid in display thermal management by creating acoustic waves to move heated air within a display to create a more uniform thermal profile within the display or to remove excess heat from the display.

Abstract: A lid controller hub (LCH) comprising processing components located in the lid of a mobile computing device, such as a laptop, processes sensor data generated by input sensors (microphones, cameras, touchscreen) and provides for improved and enhanced experiences over existing devices. For example, the LCH provides hardened privacy and the synchronization of touch display activities with the display refresh rate, the latter providing for a smoother and more responsive touch experience over existing designs. The LCH enables continuous gestures comprising touch gesture and in-air gesture portions as well as multi-plane gestures in which an initial touch gesture places the device into a mode or context in which it recognizes and acts upon subsequent in-air gestures. Touch operations of a mobile computing device can be based on user presence, user engagement, and a level of user interaction with the device.

Abstract: Techniques for selectively updating regions of a display are disclosed. In the illustrative embodiment, a display engine of a computing device sends messages to a display to update particular update regions of the display. As not the entire frame is sent, sending only the update regions can save bandwidth and power. In the illustrative embodiment, some of the update regions for a frame sent to the display may be compressed and some of the update regions for the frame may be uncompressed. Due to overhead in the compression, sending small update regions uncompressed may reduce the bandwidth and/or power used.
