Abstract: Apparatus for enabling a plasma gun to operate in a transferred arc mode when effecting a surface treatment of refractory materials that are not electrically conductive at room temperature. The apparatus includes a counter electrode that may be positioned adjacent the workpiece the use of which enables a portion of the refractory surface to be heated sufficiently for some ionization to take place to permit efficient arc working and enable a deep fused layer to be formed.
