The presence of an increased paxillin gene copy number or a paxillin mutation is indicative of an increased risk of metastasis. Methods of staging tumors and methods of reducing invasiveness or metastasis of a cancer cell are also provided. Oligonucleotides comprising a paxillin mutation and antibodies capable of recognizing a paxillin mutant are disclosed.

Also provided are methods for identifying compounds that modulate SCLC proliferation and metastasis through modulation of CXCR4 activity or expression. Further provided are methods for treating SCLC proliferation and metastasis, as well as methods for determining whether subjects are suitable candidates for treatment of SCLC via modulation of CXCR4 activity.
