摘要:
A system and method for pushing information, such as calendar event messages, from a host system to a mobile data communication device upon sensing a triggering event is disclosed. A redirector program operating at the host system enables a user to continuously redirect calendar event messages, such as meeting reminders and notices, from the host system to the user's mobile data communication device upon detecting that one or more user-defined triggering events has occurred. The redirector program operates in connection with event generating applications and repackaging systems at the host system to configure and detect a particular user-defined event, and then to repackage the calendar event messages in an electronic wrapper prior to pushing the data items to the mobile device. An optimized data structure for storing the calendar event messages is also provided.

A block-wise adaptive statistical data compressor is disclosed that operates by replacing characters in a data block with super-character codewords comprising a variable length prefix and a fixed length index. The codewords are determined by treating a plurality of groups of characters as super-character groups and then adapting the codewords, for each data block, based upon the actual frequency of occurrence of the characters in each group. The super-character prefix value identifies the group to which a particular character belongs, and the index value identifies the individual character of the group. By grouping and indexing the characters into these super-character groups, the present invention models a particular data block using a fraction of the information generally required by a fixed statistical compressor. Also disclosed are multi-stage lossless block data compressors that include the block-wise adaptive statistical compressor and also include a clustering stage and a reordering stage. The clustering stage clusters like characters into similar locations within the data block, and the reordering stage reorders the data to generate an expected skew in the frequency distribution of characters in the data block so that the block can be more efficiently compressed by the block-wise adaptive statistical compressor.

A network selection method for a mobile station which is associated with a Home Public Land Mobile Network (HPLMN) identified by a home Mobile Network Code (MNC) and Mobile Country Code (MCC) pair. The mobile station identifies a plurality of PLMNs in a geographic area, and selects a non-home PLMN identified by a non-home MNC/MCC pair and designated as a Registered PLMN (RPLMN). In response to regaining signal coverage from an out-of-coverage condition with the RPLMN, or being powered-on from a power-off state entered while operating with the RPLMN, the mobile station selects the HPLMN if the HPLMN identified by the home MNC/MCC pair is available. Otherwise, if the HPLMN is unavailable and the RPLMN identified by the non-home MNC/MCC pair is available, the mobile station selects the RPLMN. However, if the RPLMN is unavailable, the mobile station selects an alternate PLMN in accordance with an automatic or manual network selection method.
