    摘要: An improved energy conversion device of the type comprising: (A) an anodic reaction zone, (i) which contains a molten alkali metal anode-reactant in electrical contact with an external circuit, and (ii) which is disposed interiorly of a tubular cation-permeable barrier to mass liquid transfer; (B) a cathodic reaction zone (i) which is disposed exteriorly of said tubular cation-permeable barrier, and (ii) which contains an electrode which is in electrical contact with both said tubular cation-permeable barrier and said external circuit; (C) a reservoir for said molten alkali metal which is adapted to supply said anode-reactant to said anodic reaction zone; and (D) a tubular ceramic header (i) which connects said reservoir with said anodic reaction zone so as to allow molten alkali metal to flow from said reservoir to said anodic reaction zone, (ii) which is sealed to said tubular cation-permeable barrier, and (iii) which is impervious and nonconductive so as to preclude both ionic and electronic current leakage between the alkali metal reservoir and the cathodic reaction zone. The improvement of the invention comprises a lap joint seal between the tubular ceramic header and said tubular cation-permeable barrier which is formed by (1) disposing the end portion of a first one of said tubes, which has been sintered to final density, inside the end portion of the second of said tubes which (i) is not sintered to final density, (ii) has an inner diameter in the unsintered state greater than the outer diameter of said first tube, and (iii) upon being sintered to final density is adapted to shrink to the extent that the inner diameter thereof is at least 0.002 inches less than the outer diameter of said first tube; and (2) sintering said second tube to shrink the same and effect a seal between said first and second tubes.

    摘要: This specification is directed to a new article of manufacture. In particular, the article is a glass sheet having first and second sides spaced apart in generally parallel planes with a multilayer coating on one of the sides of the glass sheet. The side of the glass sheet having the multilayer coating thereon is designated as the film side of the glass sheet while the other side is designated as the glass side of the glass sheet. The multilayer coating film is a film selected from the group of films consisting of a copper, stainless steel, titanium dioxide multilayer film; a copper, titanium, titanium dioxide multilayer film; and a copper, titanium, titanium nitride multilayer film. The multilayer coating film is characterized, when applied to 6 mm thick clear glass, as having: (1) a film side Y-x-y chromaticity value of reflective color falling within area A of the graph of FIG. 1 of this specification; (2) a glass side Y-x-y chromaticity value of reflective color falling within area B of the graph of FIG. 2 of this specification; (3) a visible transmittance of 5-40% for an Illuminant "C" light source; and (4) a capital Y reflectance value from 5-55 for film side reflectance and 10-45 for glass side reflectance. The color generated by this glass is one which gives a very soft copper color of great beauty and very desirable for glazing used for large building structures.

    摘要: A method of sintering green ceramic bodies comprised of polycrystalline bi- or multi-metal oxides comprising: (A) encapsulating the body to be sintered in a chamber having (i) an inner wall portion comprised of a sintered polycrystalline bi- or multi-metal oxide composition of the same type as the body being sintered such that upon heating during the sintering process volatile metal oxide constituents of said composition create an atmosphere of said constituents which surrounds the body being sintered and (ii) an outer wall portion comprised of a substantially impervious sintered ceramic which is essentially nonreactive with said polycrystalline bi- or multi-metal oxides; and (B) heating the chamber with said body encapsulated therein to a temperature and for a time necessary to sinter said body to the desired density.

    摘要: The invention is embodied in a structure for containing an alkali metal battery. A closed metal housing includes a flange having an opening therethrough. An electronically and ionically insulating ceramic member is bonded to an exterior surface of the metal housing and encircles the opening through the flange thereby to define a passageway which is an extension of the opening. An electrically insulating, cation-permeable barrier to mass liquid transfer has an interior volume and an exterior surface area. The cation-permeable barrier is bonded to the ceramic member in such a manner that the interior volume of the metal housing, the passageway defined by the ceramic member and the interior volume of the cation-permeable barrier form a first closed electrode reaction zone. A container, including a structure bonded to the ceramic member, defines a closed container which encloses the exterior surface area of the cation-permeable barrier, the volume between the interior surface area of the container and the exterior surface area of the cation-permeable barrier forming a second closed reaction zone.
