Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first substrate and a second substrate. The first substrate includes a first area including a display portion, a second area adjacent to the first area, and an organic film. The second substrate has a substrate end along a boundary between the first area and the second area, and overlaps the first area. The first substrate includes an alignment film located in the display portion, terminals located in the second area and connected to a signal source, and a first groove formed in the organic film and located between the substrate end of the second substrate and the terminals in the second area. The terminals are arranged in a first direction. The first groove extends in the first direction along the terminals.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a first substrate includes a gate line extending in a first direction, a source line extending in a second direction orthogonally crossing the first direction, a pixel electrode including a main pixel electrode extending in the second direction, and a first alignment film covering the pixel electrode. A second substrate includes a common electrode having a pair of main common electrodes arranged on both sides sandwiching the main pixel electrode and a second alignment film covering the common electrode. A liquid crystal layer is held between the first alignment film and the second alignment film and includes liquid crystal molecules. The liquid crystal layer is formed of materials having negative dielectric constant anisotropy, and the liquid crystal molecules are initially aligned substantially in parallel with the first direction when electric field is not impressed between the pixel electrode and the common electrode.

Abstract: An object of this invention is to increase the number of liquid crystal display panels obtained from a mother substrate. There is provided a liquid crystal display device including a TFT substrate and a counter substrate bonded together by a seal portion formed along the periphery of the counter substrate, the TFT substrate having a terminal area formed in a portion thereof not opposed to the counter substrate. The TFT substrate has a bank-like organic passivation film formed along the edge of the terminal area. A stepped part is formed on the organic passivation film. The film thickness of the organic passivation film on the edge side of the stepped part is greater than the film thickness inside the stepped part.
