Abstract: According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal optical element includes an optical waveguide including a first main surface and a second main surface opposed to the first main surface, an alignment film disposed on the second main surface, a liquid crystal layer which overlaps the alignment film, which includes cholesteric liquid crystals, and which reflects at least part of light incident through the optical waveguide toward the optical waveguide, and a transparent first protective layer which overlaps the liquid crystal layer, and which is formed of a water-soluble polymer or a fluorine-based resin.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal optical element includes a transparent substrate including a main surface, an alignment film disposed on the main surface, and a liquid crystal layer overlapping the alignment film and including a cholesteric liquid crystal including liquid crystal molecules stacked helically and an additive exhibiting a liquid crystalline property. In the liquid crystal layer, a reflective surface along which alignment directions of the liquid crystal molecules are identical is inclined with respect to the main surface.

Abstract: A display apparatus includes a basement, a display functional layer, a first electrode, a guard electrode, and a detection controller. The basement has a first surface and a second surface opposite to the first surface. The display functional layer is arranged on the side of the second surface of the basement. The first electrode is arranged between the basement and the display functional layer and detects an object in contact with or in proximity to the first surface. The guard electrode is arranged between the first electrode and the basement and supplied with a guard signal. The guard signal suppresses a change in capacitance generated between the first electrode and the guard electrode. The detection controller is a controller to which a signal based on a change in capacitance of the first electrode is output from the first electrode.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a lateral electric-field type of liquid crystal display device includes a display panel and a controller, wherein a frame frequency falls within a range of 1 Hz to 10 Hz, an off-leak current of each of the TFTs has a value of 1×10−15 A or less, a resistivity of a liquid crystal and a resistivity of an alignment film both fall within one of a first range and a second range, the first range being 1×1013 to 5×1013 Ω·cm, the second range being 5×1013 to 5×1014 Ω·cm, and a relationship of “R1×C1≈R2×C2” is satisfied, where R1 is a resistance and C1 is a capacity with respect to each pixel, R2 is a resistance and C2 is a capacity with respect to each pixel.
