Abstract: According to one embodiment, a first substrate includes a pixel electrode, a common electrode and a sub-pixel area including a first area and a second area. The first area includes an area where the pixel electrode exists, an axial area extending in a second direction, and branch areas extending from the axial area to a first side of the first direction. The second area includes an area where the pixel electrode does not exist, and a first gap area extending in the first direction, at a position between the adjacent branch areas. A maximum value of a first voltage applied to the pixel electrode in a first mode is higher than a maximum value of a second voltage applied to the pixel electrode in a second mode.

Abstract: According to an aspect, a display device includes an array substrate, a counter substrate, and a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules. The array substrate includes signal lines arrayed in a first direction, scanning lines arrayed in a second direction, pixel electrodes disposed respectively in openings of pixels, semiconductors provided respectively to the pixels, and a common electrode overlapping the pixel electrodes with an insulating film interposed therebetween. An end of each pixel electrode overlaps the opening of a corresponding one of the pixels. A slit of the common electrode has a polygonal shape. In the opening of each pixel, a first part of the slit overlaps the pixel electrode, and a second part of the slit overlaps a region not provided with the pixel electrode.
