A computer-implemented system and method for evaluating gas generator launchers is provided. The method includes fixing the system geometry and establishing initial conditions of the launcher to be evaluated. The initial conditions include a mass, composition and geometry of the fuel included in the gas generant, geometries of the system components, initial pressures and temperatures and the mass and geometry of the device to be launched. A gas generator internal ballistics burn rate is modeled and an amount of mass and energy added to the combustion chamber as the fuel is consumed is calculated. Then, using conservation of mass and energy principles, an energy flux rate is modeled, beginning with the fuel and ending with the work performed on the device in order to propel it from the launcher. The modeling method is performed using a computer-based gas generator launcher simulation system, which includes a means for inputting gas generator launcher geometries and initial conditions, a launcher simulator program in computer memory for resolving gas and device dynamic equations to integrate a solution from said initial conditions to the end of a launch cycle, and a display means for displaying the integrated solution.

A method of firing an automatic weapon in an underwater environment is diosed. The automatic weapon includes a barrel having a muzzle end and a chamber within the barrel. The method includes the steps of loading a blank round of ammunition into the chamber, first detonating the blank round of ammunition, creating gas and steam within the chamber as a result of detonating the blank round of ammunition, commingling expanded gas and steam to form a bubble at the muzzle end of the barrel, thereby displacing water from the chamber of the barrel and forming a dry environment throughout the chamber of the barrel, loading at least one live round of ammunition into the chamber, and detonating and firing the at least one live round of ammunition from within the dry environment prior to dissipation of the bubble.

There is presented in combination, a water vehicle and a directional cont means therefor. The water vehicle includes at least a portion thereof which is underwater during travel of the vehicle through water. The directional control means comprises a plurality of symmetrically disposed arms extendible from sides of the underwater portion of the vehicle. The arms each include a multiplicity of fins in a compact array for contact with the water through which the vehicle portion moves, each of the fins having an uncambered, neutral lift cross-section matching the hydrodynamic streamline flow thereabout at predetermined vehicle speed below the cavitation threshold.

There is presented an assembly comprising an underwater vehicle and a comation directional control and cable interconnect device therefor. The underwater vehicle remains underwater during travel of the vehicle through water. The directional control and cable interconnect device comprises a single arm extendible from one side of the underwater of vehicle. The arm includes a multiplicity of fins in a compact array for contact with the water through which the vehicle moves, each of the fins having an uncambered, neutral lift cross-section matching the hydrodynamic streamline flow thereabout at predetermined vehicle speed below the cavitation threshold.

A fluid pump and expandable energy storage device includes a substantiallyigid circular band, a substantially rigid central hub, a membrane fixed to the band and to the hub, the membrane being enlargeable by a fluid introduced into the device, and a plurality of rods interconnecting the band and the hub. The enlargeable membrane is adjacent the rods, such that enlargement of the membrane causes movement of the hub and portions of the rods away from a plane of the band. The movement causes twisting and bending of the rods, biasing the rods to return to their original positions upon release of the fluid. Upon such release, the membrane and the rods immediately return to their non-enlarged states, forcing the fluid out of the device at a high velocity.

A launching apparatus including a launch tube having fore and aft ends, each end having an opening formed therein. A muzzle cap is fitted to the fore end and a breech mounting is formed at the aft end. A primary housing is seated in the aft end, the primary housing having fore and aft ends. A first telescoping cylinder containing a first telescoping piston is positioned within the fore end of the housing and a second telescoping cylinder containing a second telescoping piston is positioned within the aft end of the housing. A ram plate and a breech mounting are connected to the first and second pistons respectively. A gas generator is provided within the housing and a projectile is seated between the ram plate and muzzle cap. The first and second cylinders and the first and second pistons expand from the housing and propel the projectile.

Disclosed is an underwater gas generator projectile launcher which includes tubular barrel having a forward muzzle end and an opposed rearward end. A projectile is positioned in this tubular barrel adjacent the forward end. An expellable closure for the forward muzzle end of the barrel means is provided. A projectile propelling piston assembly is positioned in the tubular barrel and includes a shell axially movable in the tubular barrel. This piston includes a shell having a front wall adjacent the projectile and an opposed rear wall which encloses the rearward end of the tubular barrel. This interior space is traversely segmented into a front chamber and a rear chamber by an interior plate, and this interior plate is positionable in a stationary position relative to said tubular barrel. A gas generator is positioned in the front chamber of the interior space. When the gas generator is activated, force is simultaneously applied to the front wall of the shell and the interior plate of the projectile propellant piston to move the shell of said piston in a forward direction to propel the projectile from said tubular barrel. External ocean pressure on the closure for the forward muzzle end of the tubular muzzle is equalized by force extracted in the opposite direction on the rear wall of the moveable shell by external ocean pressure.
