    摘要: Embodiments of the present invention include a method and system for a category based user interface for management of information stored on auxiliary storage of a portable computer system, e.g., a PDA. In one embodiment, files can be copied to a removable storage unit by changing the category name to which they are assigned. For example, a game that is stored on the main memory of a PDA can be copied to a memory card by changing the category of the game to a category that is associated with the expansion memory. In another embodiment, the user has the option of keeping the application in two categories or deleting the original instance. For example, after copying a game from the PDA to a memory card, the user can decide if the game will remain on the PDA or it will be removed. Alternatively, an application can also be copied from the expansion memory to the main memory by changing the category of the application to a category that is associated with the main memory.

    摘要: Sharing information between a host computer system and a peripheral computer system. Conduit programs running simultaneously on the host computer system synchronize information between the two computer systems. The conduits initiate multiple time multiplexed transfers across a single communication link between the two computer systems. In general, one or more conduits can perform a non-transfer task while another conduit can simultaneously perform a transfer over the host-peripheral communication link. The conduits may be used to load software onto the peripheral computer or to exchange e-mail between the two computer systems. While one active conduit is performing a task that does not involve use of the communication link, the other simultaneously executing conduits can use the communication link to transfer records between the host and the peripheral computer system.

    摘要: A method and system for restoring basic functionality to a portable computer system via a server accessed remotely by telephone. A user of a portable computer system which has lost data and software which was held in volatile memory may connect to a server to restore basic functionality to the portable computer system. The server may be an enterprise or a web-based server. The connection may be made, for instance, over a 1-800 or a 1-900 telephone line. The server transfers sufficient software to the RAM of the portable computer for it to regain basic functionality. For example, synchronization software may be transferred to the portable computer. The portable computer may then use the synchronization software to synchronize via the server or host connection more fully in order to restore lost data or lost software applications that were stored on a server or on a host computer system. The step of synchronizing to restore lost data and applications may be done with a second server or, in another embodiment, with the same server which helped the portable computer system regain basic functionality. In one embodiment, the portable computer system can be a palmtop computer system.
