摘要:
Methods and apparatus are disclosed for harvesting energy from motion of one or more joints. Energy harvesters comprise: a generator for converting mechanical energy into corresponding electrical energy; one or more sensors for sensing one or more corresponding characteristics associated with motion of the one or more joints; and control circuitry connected to receive the one or more sensed characteristics and configured to assess, based at least in part on the one or more sensed characteristics, whether motion of the one or more joints is associated with mutualistic conditions or non-mutualistic conditions. If conditions are determined to be mutualistic, energy harvesting is engaged. If conditions are determined to be non-mutualistic, energy harvesting is disengaged.

An implantable cuff having an improved closure is disclosed. The closure has a set of small interdigitated tubes lying along the edges of a longitudinal slit opening in the cuff. A rod-like locking member is inserted through the interdigitated tubes to lock the cuff closed. A flexible flap attached to the inside of the cuff electrically and mechanically isolates the interior of the cuff from the exterior. The cuff has particular application as a nerve cuff for recording electrical nerve activity and for electrically stimulating nerves.

An FES method for partially restoring the motor function of a person having paralyzed muscles, the method comprising implanting a force sensor comprising a nerve electrode for sensing electrical signals primarily from mechanoreceptors associated with a peripheral sensory nerve that supplies glabrous skin of the person having the paralyzed muscles; producing an electrical control signal for activating a muscle stimulator in response to the electrical signals sensed by the nerve electrode; and stimulating the paralyzed muscles in accordance with the control signal.
