The electrode is configured to generate either or both of positive and negative polarity ions. The straightening vane is disposed in the air flow and attenuates loss-causing air flow patterns by redirecting the loss-causing air flow toward a single output direction and redirects portions of the air flow having other trajectories toward the single output direction. The straightening vane has a plurality of uniformly distributed apertures, each having a depth that is a function of the open area of the aperture.

A room ionization system includes a plurality of emitter modules, each including an electrical ionizer. The emitter modules are spaced around the room and are connected in a daisy-chain manner to a system controller. Each emitter module has an individual address for allowing the system controller or a remote control transmitter to individually address and control each emitter module. Electrical lines containing both power and communication lines connect the plurality of emitter modules with the system controller. Each emitter module stores a balance reference value and an ion output current reference value for use by automatic balance control and automatic ion output current control circuitry. These reference values are stored in a software-adjustable memory so that they may be easily changed via the system controller or via the remote control transmitter if actual measured balance or decay times in the work space, such as measured by a charged plate monitor, indicate an ion imbalance or out of range ion output current. Each emitter module can send detailed alarm condition information and emitter module identification information to the system controller upon detection of a malfunction. Each emitter module connected to the system controller may be individually set to a desired operating power mode. The emitter modules use a switching power supply to lessen effects of line loss. Each emitter module includes miswire protection circuitry so that the electrical lines may be automatically flipped if initially connected in the reverse manner.

The shape of the duct gently flares outwardly from the inlet to the outlet to provide a wider but flattened configuration in the direction of the air path although the cross-sectional areas of the inlet and outlet ends of the duct are substantially equal, whereby air exiting from the duct covers a broader yet extended range. Incorporating an A.C. static eliminator in the duct adjacent the outlet yields a uniform field of air ionization.

Ionizing gas gun for ultra-clean static neutralization comprises a plastic nozzle enclosing positive and negative ion discharge electrodes and means for blowing a gas, such as air or nitrogen therethrough. A trigger actuates both the release of gas and application of positive and negative high voltage to the respective discharge electrodes, including delay circuitry for suspending discontinuance of the positive high voltage to its electrode for a momentary period subsequent to discontinuance of the negative high voltage when the gas is cut off in compensation of a slight preponderance of negative ion emission otherwise effected at cut-off. Venturi ports at the nozzle tip draw air over the discharge electrodes for admixing with higher mobility nitrogen ions when nitrogen rather than air is employed as the blowing medium. A changeable filter insures cleanliness, including monitoring means to indicate clogged or ruptured filter conditions or improper installation.
