Processing of the received samples for the timeslot that does not require a transport format combination (TFC) code list or a TFC code list valid indicator is performed. Next, a TFCI value for the timeslot is received and is processed at the timeslot rate, producing the TFC code list and the TFC code list valid indicator. Then processing in the timeslot that requires the TFC code list or the TFC code list valid indicator is performed.

A method and apparatus for managing power during discontinuous reception (DRX) mode are disclosed. A DRX mode is defined for a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) for reducing power consumption of the WTRU. During the DRX mode, the WTRU enters into a sleep state and periodically wakes up for processing paging blocks for detecting a paging indication for the WTRU and a corresponding paging message. If the WTRU is paged the WTRU terminates the DRX mode. If the WTRU is not paged, the WTRU reenters the sleep state. For power management during the DRX mode, a synchronization update period is defined. The synchronization update period is a period for performing automatic frequency correction and/or frame time correction.

Multi-user detection (MUD) performance is optimized to eliminate redundant use of power during processing. An overbuilt A-matrix, i.e., a system response matrix, is provided. The overbuilt A-matrix uses all possible codes, e.g., all codes identified in a candidate code list (CCL) provided by blind code detection (BCD). The overbuilt A-matrix is passed to the MUD which extracts only those rows or columns required for codes that have actually been received, thus eliminating the need to recompute whitening matched filter (WMF) outputs that do not correspond to the actually received code.

If not, then a full DTX indicator is set for the previous frame to false and the method ends. If full DTX is allowed, then it is determined if a special burst has been detected. If so, then the full DTX indicator is set for the previous frame to true and the method ends. If a special burst has not been detected, then it is determined if a transport format combination indicator (TFCI) has been accepted. If the TFCI has been accepted, then the full DTX indicator is set for the previous frame to false and the method ends. If the TFCI has not been accepted, then the method ends without setting the full DTX indicator for the previous frame.

Upon the UE transmission power requirement exceeding the maximum or allowable transmission power the MAC may be informed for subsequent TFC selection of all TFCs that currently exceed this limit. The UE may then chose the TFC with the next lower transmission power requirement and the sequence will continue until an acceptable TFC is determined. The system also enables the replacement of the TFCs in the TFCS and advanced determination of non-supported TFCs. The TFCs that require transmission power greater then the maximum or allowed UE transmission power shall be determined continuously in every TTI, not just in TTIs where the maximum power has been exceeded.
