摘要: A surgical portal and introducer assembly includes an introducer dimensioned for at least partial positioning within a tissue tract, and having a longitudinal introducer channel extending therethrough and a portal positionable within the longitudinal channel of the introducer. The introducer defines leading and trailing ends, and further has a frangible segment adapted to separate to expose the introducer channel. The portal has at least one longitudinal port for passage of a surgical object. The portal comprises a compressible material and is adapted to transition from a first expanded condition to a second compressed condition upon advancement through the longitudinal channel of the introducer to facilitate passage through the introducer whereby, upon separating of the frangible segment, the portal is released from the longitudinal channel to transition toward the first expanded condition to be generally secured within the tissue tract.

摘要: A surgical portal and introducer assembly includes an introducer defining a longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal passageway and a portal member positionable within the longitudinal passageway of the introducer. The portal member is adapted for positioning within a tissue tract and has at least one longitudinal port for passage of a surgical object. The portal member comprises a compressible material and is adapted to transition between a first expanded condition to facilitate securing of the portal member within the tissue tract and in substantial sealed relation with tissue surfaces defining the tissue tract and a second compressed condition to facilitate at least partial insertion of the portal member within the tissue tract. The assembly may include an expandable restraining member at least partially disposed within the longitudinal passageway of introducer. The restraining member is adapted to expand and compress the portal member to cause the portal member to assume the compressed condition thereof, to thereby facilitate passage of the portal member through the longitudinal passageway of the introducer and into the tissue tract.

摘要: A method for cooling of a brain with localized hypothermia allowing for maintenance of the core body temperature is achieved by positioning a cooling catheter within a ventricular cavity of the brain. The cooling catheter includes an inlet channel and an outlet channel providing for a closed flow of a cooling fluid into and out of the cooling catheter. A sack is formed at a distal end of the cooling catheter. The sack is in fluid communication with distal ends of the inlet channel and the outlet channel such that the sack is continually flushed with the cooling fluid as the cooling fluid flows into and out of the cooling catheter. The sack, when filled, takes the shape and size of the ventricular cavity filling the ventricular cavity in which it is positioned. The method further includes cooling the cooling catheter and the ventricular cavity through the closed flow of the cooling fluid through the cooling catheter.

摘要: An imaging system for imaging an object. The imaging system includes a support member adapted to receive the object in an immobilized state. The system also includes first means for imaging the immobilized object in a first imaging mode to capture a first image, and second means for imaging the immobilized object in a second imaging mode, different from the first imaging mode, to capture a second image. The first imaging mode is selected from the group: x-ray mode and radio isotopic mode. The second imaging mode is selected from the group: bright-field mode and dark-field mode. A removable phosphor screen is employed when the first image is captured and not employed when the second image is captured. The phosphor screen is adapted to transduce ionizing radiation to visible light. The phosphor screen is adapted to be removable without moving the immobilized object. The system can further include means for generating a third image comprised of the first and second image.
